Baby name Gene?

Hey everyone, we are due our first baby (a boy) in 5 weeks. We have always loved the name Gene for a boy, but we are having cold feet as we are worried people might think it sounds a bit feminine?
Other alternatives we have, but like less, are Art, Jude or Hugh.
What do people think of Gene??! Feel like we are getting tight on time now 😂

Absolutely, the other 99% of parents will bring up bullies
It only takes a few. You don’t need 100% of all other children to do it for it to be bullying

With a name like Gene, it’ll make the kid an easy target!

CamdenTownie · 19/03/2019 19:19

I love it!

SavoyCabbage · 19/03/2019 19:21

I love it and wasn’t happy when Phoebe told Chandler he couldn’t carry off a cool name but suited Gene.

funmummy48 · 19/03/2019 19:22

Love it!

I don’t know if I’m just living in a shell but...I’ve never heard of the name Gene before! is it pronounced like ‘jean’ or ‘genie’? not sure if I’m a fan if it tbh. I like Jude or Hugh tho, they are both lovely! go with what you love op x

SherlocksDeerstalker · 19/03/2019 20:49

I love gene. I have one, but it’s a middle name for mine. The Gene Genie! There are a million Judes and Hugo’s. Go with what you love.

LivC12345 · 19/03/2019 22:51

@mrsdavys How so? For a name that isn't even that out there?? The right kid could definitely pull it off.

GreenTulips · 19/03/2019 23:18

mrsdavys

So you believe the victim is somehow responsible for horrid children being the way they are because of a name and if that child had been call John none of the bullying would happen?

Nice

Tavannach · 20/03/2019 01:52

Go for it. It's great.

BasiliskStare · 20/03/2019 02:00

I would go for Hugh - I think it is a fantastic name - I wanted it for Ds but after much discussion we didn't but a really brilliant name. Don't like Art Jude or Gene , but then it will not be my son - so all best wishes whichever you choose

@mrsdavys: ‘I promise you, a boy named Gene will be bullied at school’

Sit down, you have no idea!

Herefortheduration · 20/03/2019 06:27

I've known a Eugene shortened to Gene and a Genevieve shortened to Gene, both super cool, love the name. I still know the female one 30 years later and do say Hygiene to her and giggle, she rolls her eyes and we carry on.

Herefortheduration · 20/03/2019 06:29

Do kids still get bullied because of their names nowadays? With so many unusual names I think it's more likely to be the Kevin's and Gary's who get that now, if at all.

GirlRaisedInTheSouth · 20/03/2019 06:36

Absolutely love Gene! It’s very, very cool.

As for the PP’s suggestion that your DS would be bullied... I seriously wonder what type of rough schools these parents send their DC to.

No I just said it would make him an easy target. Of course it’s not blaming the victim- it’s just knowing what kids are like in schools.

mrsdavys · 20/03/2019 10:13

And oh yes @GirlRaisedInTheSouth bullying only happens in ‘rough’ schools Hmm

GirlRaisedInTheSouth · 20/03/2019 11:06

mrsdavys, not at all. I have just never heard of someone being bullied because of their name. I am curious as to what kind of person would behave like that.

Hellie36 · 20/03/2019 19:32

I have a Gene and a Jude! ( and Ned & Ivo) we love the name it's unusual without being Crazy! Jude is 15 and it always sounds great, they never have another one in their class 😁 go for it!

Supposedly · 24/03/2019 17:12

Great taste in names Hellie36 ☺️
Just wondering, with Gene did you have negative reactions or confusion regarding gender when you said the name aloud? I still love the name but I am afraid of having to explain it! Positive responses on this thread have eased my doubts somewhat!

Our Gene is only 11 weeks but we haven't had any gender confusion, I don't think there are many female Jeans of the new generation! It took our older relatives abit of getting used to but that's just because it's unusual! Good luck with your new arrival & enjoy choosing a fab name 😁😁

Supposedly · 24/03/2019 20:03

That’s good to hear! I think we will choose it if it looks like it suits him when he comes out. Thanks for the advice Grin
