Will Emmeline be mispronounced?

redroses86 · 20/02/2019 14:06

Emmeline has been my favourite girls name for a very long time and our baby girl is due any day.....
Recently I’ve told a few people our name to judge the feelings around it and at least two have replied with ‘ah, Emily’. I’m now really worried that we will have to spent a lifetime correcting people, although we do intend to use Emmie as a shorter name.
Should I go with Florence, which is our second choice?
I’d really appreciate some opinions!

Some people might say emel-leen or emel-line. I think I prefer Florence

17caterpillars1mouse · 20/02/2019 14:11

I took it off my list due to worrying it would be ptonounces line. If you are going to call her Elsie day to day though then it's not really a big deal.

Florence was also on my shortlist butbdidnt use due to popularity

EssentialHummus · 20/02/2019 14:11

Much prefer it to Florence. You will get people hearing Emily though, that’s how it is.

CatSmize · 20/02/2019 14:14

How is it supposed to be pronounced? I would say emel-leen, stress on the second syllable. It doesn't sound like Emily to me.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 20/02/2019 14:16

There's a 10 year old Emmeline in dds class at school and she does indeed have to constantly correct people from calling her Emily. I would go with Florence.

Ribbonsonabox · 20/02/2019 14:16

I think it's a lovely name and you should use it!

I'm called Lana and I routinely get called Anna... and my friend is called Alex and gets Alice often.... people mishear loads of more common names as well.... I dont think you should try and guard to heavily against that.

AuntMarch · 20/02/2019 14:17

If you will be using Emmie, people will hear Emmie. Which I love by the way! May add it to my own list

CatSmize · 20/02/2019 14:21

I'm another one who has to correct people when they hear my relatively easy to understand name. It doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I now live abroad and always have to spell my very common surname (e.g Smith)!

Emmeline is a lovely name and I wouldn't not choose it just because people might mishear it.

EntirelyAnonymised · 20/02/2019 14:28

I have a 4 letter name and people mishear it all the time. Call her what you want to call her, people will still make mistakes, whatever.

Karigan195 · 20/02/2019 14:30

Not unless you’re in America. I know two emmelines and both get pronounced and spelt fine but one tells a funny story about being called amarlion in America (phonetic attempt)

RuthW · 20/02/2019 15:30

My name is Ruth and very often gets misheard as Liz or Rose

Dd is Florence and has been heard as Lauren but this was a time 22 years ago when Lauren was popular and Florence was unheard of.

JanetWeb2812 · 20/02/2019 15:47

You may love the name but consider the practical drawbacks of a name that can be mis-spelled in so many ways.

123Flopsy · 20/02/2019 16:48

It can be pronounced Emelyne and Emeleen.

sunshineandshowers21 · 20/02/2019 16:55

my daughter is called emmeline (em-uh-leen) and no one has ever pronounced it differently... yet! we tend to call her emmie but my dad calls her lena which is quite sweet.

3out · 20/02/2019 17:00

I would have said it as emmaline, but if you told me you were going to pronounce it emmaleen then that’s what I’d call her :)

HugoBearsMummy · 20/02/2019 17:15

I'm a Jade a get called Jane LOADS especially on the phone (I'm a receptionist) I hardly bother to correct ppl anymore, cba lol. If you like the name I'd go for it. I'm not keen on Florence as I don't like the shortened version of 'Flo' reminds me of a ladies 'monthly AF' 😳

daisypond · 20/02/2019 18:56

Emmeline is fine. It's a nice name and quite well established. If people mishear it, they mishear it. They can be corrected.

redroses86 · 20/02/2019 19:10

Thank you, I really appreciate all of your help.
I’m still undecided, DH added Emilia into the mix this afternoon and this has made me every more confused. I know Amelia is super popular but I’ve always loved it and Emilia might still give me the Emmie that I’m aiming for!

I wouldn’t worry. DD is Romilly and she still gets called Emily. 🤷‍♀️

NorthEndGal · 20/02/2019 19:15

As a Canadian, I would pronounce it
Emma line (rhymes with fine)

NorthEndGal · 20/02/2019 19:16

Or like it rhymes with Coroline

Whoops75 · 20/02/2019 19:23

Think Emelia would have to be constantly explained Amelia with an E.

Emmeline isn’t a name one come across before, emme line(fine) or Emmaleen.
How do you get the middle A sound with an E in the middle.

3out · 20/02/2019 19:28

I’d go with it if you like it. Names are always going to be said incorrectly.

afrikat · 20/02/2019 19:31

I think it's a beautiful name. Use the name you love, you'll regret it otherwise

Crikeyblimey · 20/02/2019 19:36

It’s a lovely name and I’m now singing ‘Emma, Emmaline, I’m gonna see your name high on that silver screen, Emmaline’ 😁. But in my defence, I am really old!
