Will Emmeline be mispronounced?

Emmeline has been my favourite girls name for a very long time and our baby girl is due any day.....
Recently I’ve told a few people our name to judge the feelings around it and at least two have replied with ‘ah, Emily’. I’m now really worried that we will have to spent a lifetime correcting people, although we do intend to use Emmie as a shorter name.
Should I go with Florence, which is our second choice?
I’d really appreciate some opinions!

Anyone over the age of 50 or thereabouts will have no problem with this name (unlike many of the modern unusual spelling/double barrelled names of the modern era).

We wouldn't forget Hot Chocolate's '74 hit:

Coolaschmoola · 20/02/2019 19:38

Em-i-line...

Crikeyblimey · 20/02/2019 19:40

Ariela - that’s the one!!

I prefer Emilia or Emily actually but Emmeline is fine and if you love it use it. Any of those 3 could give the Emmie you are after tho and I wouldn’t worry about people mishearing they’ll soon get it right and they mishear even the most common names, let alone some of the really out there names so Emmeline is perfectly normal - I’ve never met a young one either!

I’m not a fan of Florence, it’s ok but not my favourite name and I know a lot of them!

aliceandkids77 · 20/02/2019 21:44

just had my DD yesterday and Emmeline was on our shortlist! I think its gorgeous and timeless, a lot deal more beautiful than Florence imo and Emmy is just great! Think its a fab name ! x

BackforGood · 20/02/2019 22:09

I've only come across it in the Hot Chocolate song.
How would you pronounce it redroses ?

mishgs · 20/02/2019 22:44

I love Emilia ❤️ and wish I'd chosen it... But if you've always loved Emmeline (& will called her Emmie - which I love too!), then go with your first choice or you may regret it.

Poppiesway1 · 20/02/2019 22:51

I love the name and am actually jealous you’ll get to use it. (I have ds’s and no more babies). Please dont change it to Florence. Love it!

Joeybee · 21/02/2019 04:49

I wouldnt know for sure if this name is supposed to be pronounced Emma-Leen or Emma-Line, also lots of people will mishear this name as Emily. It really depends on how much you think this would bug you.

Mailfuckoff · 21/02/2019 04:54

I had an Emmeline at school and if people got it wrong she just corrected them. Emmeline pankhurst was an amazing woman so a great role model right there. I like it.

MrsTerryPratcett · 21/02/2019 05:13

I love it. So she has to correct people? It'll be fine.

Elemjaybee83 · 21/02/2019 06:18

Go with the name you love! My daughter is Emmeline and she’s 2. We do sometimes get Emily when we first say her name but then people get it. I tend to say her name a little slower now and people tend to get it first time. The librarian got it first time the other day and loved it 😊 Can’t imagine her being called anything else now. We pronounce is Emme-leen

cricketmum84 · 21/02/2019 06:26

Go with the name you love and don't worry about the pronunciation. As PP have said even the easiest names get mispronounced (mine included). I get Laura, Lauren, Lorrie, Maura and even Maureen and Lola on occasion. None of these are my name...

Baby2namehelp · 21/02/2019 06:39

Really it’s just a correction, call her what her want. I am called something similar to Maria and get called Marie all the time. I just correct people.

McPuff · 21/02/2019 06:42

We have similar taste in names, OP, I have an Emilia Florence. Have had a few people think it's Amelia but they're pronounced a bit differently so most get that it's Emil rather than Ameel at the start. Ours is only tiny so haven't settled on a nickname yet, Emmie is nice though.

lotsoffreckles · 21/02/2019 07:09

I have a 2 year old Emmeline and I do have to correct people sometimes, they just hear the beginning but it really doesn't matter, I love her name and I get so many compliments. If it's your favourite please use it, I'm obviously biased but it's a beautiful name 😍

imanoldbattleaxe · 21/02/2019 07:28

Love Emmaline, IMO Emilia will get mis spelt a lot. Just correct people when they abbreviate it.

redroses86 · 21/02/2019 14:11

Thank you, I’m pretty sure we will go with it, otherwise I think I will always regret and feel jealous if I come across another one!
Now just need to consider a middle name to go with it.....?! More decisions!

Depends on the pronunciation you are going for.

lotsoffreckles · 21/02/2019 17:18

Middle names we considered (my Emmelines is in there somewhere), all have family connections for us:

Alice
Anne
Frances
Iris

Pemba · 22/02/2019 15:39

Emmeline - so much nicer and more unusual than Florence.
