Is clementine a good name? i love it but am worried others will consider it weird im naming a kid after fruit. I also like the idea of minerva (minnie for short). What are your opinions on these names? any suggestions accepted too

Minerva is great. Not Clementine though unless you want people singing "Oh my Darling …………………" when she enters a room.

ReaganSomerset · 11/02/2019 19:16

Read the words to 'my darling Clementine'. It's a hideous song. She drowns and her father then kills himself.

Put me off, that's for sure.

DramaAlpaca · 11/02/2019 19:17

I love Clementine, it's beautiful.

I'm not so keen on Minerva & really dislike Minnie.

Yogagirl123 · 11/02/2019 19:19

I like it, but it would probably be shortened.

ReaganSomerset · 11/02/2019 19:23

it would probably be shortened

Fair point. I'd try to steer towards Tinie or Minty rather than Clem/Clemmie (phlegm, phlegmy).

MrsMuffins · 11/02/2019 19:24

I LOVE Clementine, but I’m not sure I’d be brave enough to use it - we get enough raised eyebrows at DS’s name, which isn’t even that unusual. I also love Clemency - might that be an option?

LeadMeToTheChocolate · 11/02/2019 19:25

Love Clementine!

BlueMerchant · 11/02/2019 19:27

Think Clementine is lovely. Personally don't like Minerva at all.

flamethrower123 · 11/02/2019 19:27

I have a Clementine and I love the name.
The name came before the fruit, father Clement Rodier found the species of fruit that later became Clementine after his name.
The name means merciful, gentle, kind.
My little girl is called Clem, Clemmie, Clementine by her friends and she loves her name.
I like it because everyone has heard of the name but few people have it.

drumandthebass · 11/02/2019 19:31

Love it

Lightbee · 11/02/2019 19:35

I think of Mark Owen’s Clementine when I hear it.

It’s a lovely name

GemmeFatale · 11/02/2019 19:37

Love Clementine.

If bump was a girl it would be on the list.

WonderlandBride · 11/02/2019 19:38

@Lightbee I cane here to say that too, and now it's stuck in my head and will be blasting from Spotify as soon as the baby is asleep.

I love the name OP. I've never met a clementine, but it's beautiful. X

lljkk · 11/02/2019 19:48

Minerva is great.
Clementine... omg, please don't.

stepup123 · 11/02/2019 19:51

Clementine is lovely - Minnie not so. Sorry op!

RaeCJ82 · 11/02/2019 20:03

I really like Clementine. Minerva sounds like a contraceptive...!

Newyearsameoldshit · 11/02/2019 20:14

I love both!

southernetter · 11/02/2019 20:22

I too thought of the contraceptive pill when I read Minerva in the OP. I love the name Clementine but not keen on the shortening of it.

ChesterGreySideboard · 11/02/2019 20:24

I love Clementine but my first thought was ‘Oh My Darling’.

stellarfox · 11/02/2019 22:49

I love it, she would probably get Clemmy.

My great grandmother was just called Minnie (no longer name) so it is usable as it is

Bouncingbelle · 12/02/2019 00:01

Clementine is ridiculously fussy and even clem for short just sounds like phlegm.
Minerva is quite different in a good way but looks like a contraceptive and minnie is awful.
I think we may just have different tastes in names.

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/02/2019 00:07

Would you pronounce it with a “tine” or “teen” ending? I like it, and Clem is cute too.

If you like Minnie as a nickname, how about Minna as a formal name?

I also like Ginevra - Ginny is nice as well.

colourrunruinedmyhair · 12/02/2019 00:51

@MrsSchadenfreude I have a Clementine and so far have noticed posher people pronounce it Clemen’teen’ and people like me (not posh Grin) pronounce it Clemen’tine’
She gets Clemmie and Clem too.

Every time a Clementine thread comes up people always make comments about it rhyming with phlegm, the song oh my darling Clementine and being named after a fruit and as both a parent of a Clementine and a daughter of a Clementine.
I always want to say the name came before the fruit and even if it didn’t it’s not any different to flower names like Lilly, Fern, Holly, Sage.
As for the song, there are a good selection of awful songs out there with girls names in them. Alice is super popular at the moment and no one mentions living next door to Alice songs on the name boards whenever Alice is mentioned and as for rhyming with phlegm I’m pretty sure you can get any name to rhyme with a gross word if you want to.

Personally I really love the name Clementine op, I don’t see it as overly girlie or anything like that. It personally always reminds me of the leading lady character from Eternal Sunshine and she rocked the name.

Topseyt · 12/02/2019 01:04

I do quite like Clementine. Wasn't Winston Churchill's wife called Clementine? Not suggesting that you are naming your child after her, but just think I remember reading about her somewhere.

People may think of small oranges, but as someone already said, as a name it long pre-dates those.

I'm not a fan of Minerva. Nor of Minnie either (Minnie Mouse).

Ribbonsonabox · 12/02/2019 01:20

Love them both!
