Emmanuel

Posting for a friend who isn't on MN, she loves the name but doesn't want people to think the baby is named after Emmanuel Macron - I didn't even make that connection until she said it, so I think it would be fine.

Thoughts on the name and possible connection?

I would make the Bibilical connection rather than macron, it's a beautiful name

Phebes · 28/12/2018 21:42

Looove it. It’s a bit religious maybe but a beautiful name.

tammytoby · 28/12/2018 21:44

Great strong name!

DramaAlpaca · 28/12/2018 21:45

I'd assume the parents were very religious.

ShadyLady53 · 28/12/2018 21:49

I thought it was a lovely, Christian name. I like the nickname Manny.

HopeGarden · 28/12/2018 21:55

I am a bit embarrassed to say that I had to google Emmanuel Macron. Now I feel that I should have known who he was without googling. Blush

Anyway. The religious connotations were the first thing that came to my mind. It’s a name that I perceive as very religious.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 28/12/2018 21:57

I love it.

Dontrocktheboat · 28/12/2018 21:59

I like the name, would not think of Macron but possibly of the Christmas carol (O come, O come Emmanuel) - which could possibly be a source of teasing!

moodyblues · 28/12/2018 22:00

Really great name, was on the list for ds2.

AuntieStella · 28/12/2018 22:02

I'm another who sees it as a very Christian name (Advent hymn:'Oh, come, oh come Em-a-a-a-nuel')

The female version was forever pornified by the awful 70s films, but I think the boys name is sufficiently untainted

user1483644229 · 28/12/2018 22:02

I love it. It is a fairly common name in Greece. In a few years time Macron will no longer be in the limelight and the association with him will be gone.

BackforGood · 28/12/2018 22:06

I would assume African Christian if I saw the name written down Grin

Wouldn't have made a link with Macron at all.

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 28/12/2018 22:11

I immediately thought of religion and a friend of my DCs. Forgot about Macron, so I don't think many people would think she's naming him after him.

pontiouspilates · 28/12/2018 22:11

Gorgeous name and Manni is a cute NN

thereallifesaffy · 28/12/2018 22:13

I would think of the same named Cambridge college, which is known colloquially as 'Emma'.

MaisyPops · 28/12/2018 22:14

I wouldn't have made that link.

It would seem a very faith based name for me and like another poster I would initially think of it as an African Christian name.

WhatOnEarthDoIDoNow · 28/12/2018 22:14

I'm a practicing Christian and my first thought was are the parents religious. It's one of my friends middle names and he and his family are also (white english/american) Christian. I've not heard it outside of religious families before.

XXcstatic · 28/12/2018 22:15

Be warned that the GPs and everyone in their generation will automatically think of a famous soft-porn movie, Emmanuelle - probably the second most famous porn movie of the 70s after Deep Throat.

May or may not be an issue for your friend, but best that she has a heads-up - no pun intended Wink

GemmeFatale · 28/12/2018 23:46

I quite like it and I don’t think Macron would be my first thought if introduced to a baby Emanuel.

Will the baby fit the cultural associations of the name? We discounted Ziva, which I love, because husband felt we couldn’t use a name he felt we didn’t fit culturally (baby is likely to be a blue eyed blonde).

Armchairanarchist · 28/12/2018 23:48

Sorry, porn was the first thing that sprang to my mind.

Joinourclub · 28/12/2018 23:55

I like it and think Manny is so cute. I’ve met several and they have all been from African Christian backgrounds, so that’s what I’d assume if I saw the name before the person. But I wouldn’t find it strange to meet a white Emmanuel.

I also like Gabriel which I find a similar style of name.

Shadow1234 · 29/12/2018 00:20

I also thought of religion before macron.

VashtaNerada · 29/12/2018 00:29

I know a lovely little boy called Emmanuel. The family are African Christians as a pp suggested.

Carmana · 29/12/2018 00:45

We nearly used this. I'm an atheist.

We used Isaac instead which is religious too.

Flamingosnbears · 29/12/2018 09:23

Lovely name wouldn't think porn or macron ...
