I'm looking for thoughts on the name Roux ---pronounced row. My great uncle has this middle name and we are looking for something that shows our French Heritage.

Do people just think of roux sauce? Like it/hate it?

My point was just that Ru and Paul aren't separate.. So Ru is just his nickname. Not really sure what you were trying to say!

BikeRunSki · 19/12/2018 21:15

^Rue is an alternative.

^^

Rue means street^

Or Roue - which means wheel

LillianGish · 19/12/2018 21:24

It means redhead - so maybe Rufus instead?

FrigideBarjot · 19/12/2018 21:25

Ridicule.

Wallywobbles · 19/12/2018 21:28

It also means red head in French. That was French DH's first reaction. Will his brother be call Brun or Blond?

pfwow · 19/12/2018 21:30

Roux and rue are really not pronounced the same.

ForAMinuteThere · 19/12/2018 21:33

What's the difference @pfwow?

starzig · 19/12/2018 21:45

How about Rou. (like Rou Reynolds)

Heratnumber7 · 19/12/2018 21:51

Roux is pronounced "Roo" not "Row".
It's a silly name either way.

chardonm · 20/12/2018 00:54

Oh non

Knittink · 20/12/2018 08:07

What's the difference @pfwow?

It's not easy to show the difference on a screen tbh. The 'ou' is a more rounded sound. The 'ue' in 'rue' is a thinner sound which you make with your mouth in a tiny 'o' shape iyswim. There is no direct equivalent sound in English. As a French teacher I've found the difference between ou and u to be one if the hardest to teach my students to replicate.

NameChange30 · 20/12/2018 08:24

Yes, and as a native English speaker who is now fluent in French after studying it, living there for a while and marrying a French man, the "ou" sound was the last one for me to crack - my French was otherwise excellent but I was still getting it wrong.

To say "ou" correctly you have to pout a bit. Do a monkey impression, do a pout and say "oo oo oo" like a monkey, and you're probably close Grin

BikeRunSki · 20/12/2018 08:47

“Roux” is a sort of round sound.
“Rue” is thinner and sharper.

I suspect that makes no sense to anyone other than me.

FrigideBarjot · 20/12/2018 08:55

Yes, the difference in the ou and u pronunciation is very important in French. If you mispronounce merci beaucoup you can end up telling someone "thank you, nice arse"🤣

Charbovari · 20/12/2018 09:13

Indeed, Brigitte.

A friend of mine who teaches French has also begun using Lady Gaga’s Version of ‘La vie en rose’ from A Star Is Born to point out the perils of pronouncing ‘baisser’ as ‘baiser’. Especially in the context in which it appears, which would involve anatomical impossibilities.Grin

pfwow · 20/12/2018 10:53

It's so hard to explain the difference between rue and roux. But for French people (I'm French) it's as clear as the difference between it and eat for English people.
This video is good, at around 1 minute 20

pfwow · 20/12/2018 10:53

Neck and arse are great example as to why it's an important sound in French le cou and le cul.

Branleuse · 20/12/2018 10:58

I just think of roux sauce, sorry.

Gravel1 · 20/12/2018 11:14

Roo

jessstan2 · 20/12/2018 11:31

Why name your child after a recipe? Lasagne would be better.

WrapAndRoll · 20/12/2018 11:51

Sauce.

If you want Roo as nickname, make it short for Reuben, Rufus or Rupert or Kangaroo 🦘----

Wooooooooaaaaaaaahhhhhhh · 20/12/2018 13:47

I’ve met a couple of Roux’s. But it’s pronounced Roo, like the sauce.

tammytoby · 20/12/2018 13:50

Is this thread a joke Grin?

Topseyt · 20/12/2018 15:00

No. Awful. Also, you should pronounce it Roo (as in the baby kangaroo in the Winnie the Pooh stories).

Please reconsider.

Topseyt · 20/12/2018 15:02

Rue should not be an option either. It means street or road.

Roue is wheel.
