I'm looking for thoughts on the name Roux ---pronounced row. My great uncle has this middle name and we are looking for something that shows our French Heritage.

Do people just think of roux sauce? Like it/hate it?

go for Xavier, then you can have the X in the alphabet

SisterMortificado · 19/12/2018 08:11

Roux sauce. Instant first thought.
Pick something else. There are heaps of super French names, don't go for food.

ViragoKnows · 19/12/2018 08:16

People will get used to it very quickly, even if there dirst thought is “sauce”, they'll get over it. It’s meaningful, and a family name; I’d go for it Smile Get the pronunciation ironed out, though.

Are you saying it row to rhyme with “Low” or row to rhyme with “now”? Do you think family pronunciation has corrupted it from “roo”?

GinIsIn · 19/12/2018 08:19

Honestly, I think if you can’t pronounce it then you are probably a bit far removed from your French heritage to go for a French first name. Especially one that everyone knows is a sauce. Sorry!

foxtiger · 19/12/2018 11:00

I've only ever heard it pronounced Roo too, and that would be consistent with the usual French pronunciation rules. I thought of the guy in Chocolat too, but I think it's a nickname in his case. He plays a very small part in one of JH's other books, in which I'm almost sure it's mentioned that his real name is actually Michel!

Avegemitesandwich · 19/12/2018 11:02

First thought sauce.

Twelve8Ts · 19/12/2018 12:09

I know of a 1 year old little boy named Roux

Flamingosnbears · 19/12/2018 13:23

Wouldn't suggest you name your child that have a look on jolis prenoms

Laureline · 19/12/2018 15:57

I must admit I find it strange (and I am French...). As a family surname, yes, but it’s not a first name.

halfwitpicker · 19/12/2018 16:13

It is roo for sure.

Rue is an alternative.

^^

Rue means street.

halfwitpicker · 19/12/2018 16:14

Mire poix is nice though....

Knittink · 19/12/2018 16:14

Why on earth would you pronounce it 'row'? Confused

3timeslucky · 19/12/2018 16:19

As well as the start of a white sauce "roux" is French for red head (masculine). But it is pronounced Roo for both meanings.

If you were French you might get away with it but I don't think your child would thank you for it. Given you're not French I'd think again.

😂 Is his brother Choux?

Roux is definitely a sauce

ForgivenessIsDivine · 19/12/2018 18:26

Maybe if he has red hair it could be a cute nick name..

NameChange30 · 19/12/2018 18:27

Given that you can't even pronounce it properly, you shouldn't use it as a name for your child.

HTH

BeekyChitch · 19/12/2018 18:35

My first thought was a base sauce. Pronounced "roo" or possibly "roe". Dislike both as a name.

Cosmoa · 19/12/2018 20:32

@Joinourclub

Rupaul's name is spelt Rupaul, not Ru Paul!

I think Roux looks a bit faux French even if it isn't.

Charbovari · 19/12/2018 20:36

If you can’t pronounce it, you shouldn’t use it.

Snapsnapsnap · 19/12/2018 20:41

Ah, you've just hit my threshold for silly names, and it's a high bar!

IsabelleSE19 · 19/12/2018 20:53

Balonz?

Joinourclub · 19/12/2018 20:54

Maybe Cosmoa but according to wikipedia He was named by his mother, Ernestine "Toni" Charles, a Louisiana native; the "Ru" came from roux, which is the term for the base of gumbo and other creole stews and soups !

pfwow · 19/12/2018 21:00

I agree, definitely it's a surname, and it's not like calling your child Taylor or something, it doesn't work ever as a first name, it's like naming your child Baker or something. It's not even really pronounced Roo, the way French people pronounce ou isn't really a sound we can say easily in English. So I would say don't use it. There are lots of nice French boys names out there.

pfwow · 19/12/2018 21:01

Also, in French it means ginger, the hair colour not the root.
