I'm looking for thoughts on the name Roux ---pronounced row. My great uncle has this middle name and we are looking for something that shows our French Heritage.

Do people just think of roux sauce? Like it/hate it?

That’s a paste of flour and butter, add milk. You can do better.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/12/2018 22:55

If I saw it written I’d think ‘as in the sauce?’ (I didn’t know it was a name) if I heard you say it (I thought it was Roo) I’d think ‘as in Kanga?’

EssentialHummus · 18/12/2018 22:55

I’m not keen, sorry.

Cherries101 · 18/12/2018 22:56

It’s a precurser to white sauce and probably why it was your gu’s middle name. Use his first name or surname.

mycatplotsdeath · 18/12/2018 22:57

Non

bridgetreilly · 18/12/2018 22:57

It's not pronounced row (either to rhyme with no or now), it's pronounced roo. And it would be a very weird choice for a boy. I think even in France it's a surname, not a first name.

oser · 18/12/2018 23:00

I'd pronounce it Roo? And don't like it.

randomsabreuse · 18/12/2018 23:02

Sauce or surname of Michel x2.

Bringmewineandcake · 18/12/2018 23:03

There’s a boy called Roux in my DD’s school...it’s pronounced Roo though. I like it.
If you like the ‘row’ sound, why not have Rowan?

Joinourclub · 18/12/2018 23:03

Like Ru Paul? Well, I think he’s great so why not?

Shadow1234 · 18/12/2018 23:06

I have only ever heard it pronounced roo as well. Not keen on the row pronounciation tbh.

ForAMinuteThere · 18/12/2018 23:08

It is roo for sure.

Rue is an alternative.

RoseAndRose · 18/12/2018 23:19

It's pronounced Roo (in French) and is a surname - possibly your relative's mother's maiden name? (That's a reasonably common naming habit tomstick that in the middle)

I've never come across it as a first name, and don't really take to it, sorry.

LittleKitty1985 · 18/12/2018 23:21

I really like it! (as Roo, not Row)

ChanklyBore · 18/12/2018 23:21

How do you even pronounce row?

Row as in boat is pronounced different to row as in argument.

If there are different ways for the phonetic spelling you’ve not a hope with the original.

ILoveDolly · 18/12/2018 23:23

It is pronounced roo as others have said. I thought it was also the masculine term for a redhead (ginger)

usernametaken · 18/12/2018 23:25

Reuben and shorten to Roux?

HankyPanky04 · 18/12/2018 23:26

It's my dogs name!🙈

doublethink · 18/12/2018 23:43

I know a gorgeous little boy called Roux (pronounced Roo).

DeepIn40 · 19/12/2018 07:47

Don't go for a name you mispronounce! Lifetime of corrections. Just go for the normal pronunciation.

recently · 19/12/2018 07:49

Isn't there a Roux in the book Chocolat?

SinkGirl · 19/12/2018 07:50

Yep, sauce, then Michel and Michel Jr.

And it’s definitely pronounced roo. Every time someone asks his name he’ll then have to spell it. Not a good plan.

Chewbecca · 19/12/2018 07:50

Roux is

  1. pronouncy roo
  2. flour, butter and milk
  3. surname of French family of chefs.
Kittybelle123 · 19/12/2018 07:59

Definitely pronounced Roo. Lovely boy at my DD's school named Roux. Not a name I'd have thought of but he makes it a very cool name.

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 19/12/2018 08:07

No.

Id go Reuben and nickname Roo if you like the sound.
