Daphne

I’m looking for strong girls names and love the idea of historical or literary connotations. I’m finding the likes of Emmeline, Rosa are very popular as well as the Shakespearean Ophelia, Aurelia etc. I started looking at Greek or Roman gods as I liked Penelope and came across Daphne. She was a nymph in Greek mythology and there is also a famous author Daphne du Maurier. I’m just worried I like the association more than the name. Any thoughts?

Penelope is nicer than Daphne.

ZebraKid71 · 16/12/2018 11:54

I know siblings called daphne and Penelope. I prefer Penelope. I should like daphne as its a bit different and quirky but well known but for some reason I just don't.

tammytoby · 16/12/2018 12:01

Isn't it Daphné?

ernjas · 16/12/2018 12:08

Prefer Penelope to Daphne.

Annandale · 16/12/2018 12:13

Prefer Helena or Athena to either, but Daphne is quite modish now I think.

Daphne is a great name.

Phebes · 16/12/2018 15:14

Lovely

She was a nymph in Greek mythology

As far as I remember, she was sworn to Artemis but Apollo was constantly after her. Eventually her father the river god changed her into a laurel tree to stop him catching her, and then Apollo started taking her leaves to make wreaths instead.

I adore Daphne.

I love Daphne - it's a beautiful name.

FlyingMonkeys · 16/12/2018 16:11

Scooby Doo

daisypond · 16/12/2018 16:14

Daphne is very nice. It definitely doesn't have an accent.

WillowintheUK · 16/12/2018 16:35

Makes me think of Daphne in The Broons, but I'm Scots, so that's probably why. Not a name I particularly warm to, but nothing wrong with it. Penelope is lovely though.

missmouse101 · 16/12/2018 16:37

I just think of Daffy when I hear it. Not a great nickname.

TheDustBunny · 16/12/2018 16:51

Daphne is such an ugly name. Penelope is lovely.

EloisaJane · 16/12/2018 17:24

It is a lovely name but the potential nn's put me off (Daffers, Daffy)

The only Daphne I know is 97 and is known as Daffers by one and all. It's a nice name but tone to nicknames such as Daffers and Daffy. If you are happy with that then go for it!

Watto1 · 16/12/2018 20:18

Prone, not tone

Whyareallthegoodnamesgone · 17/12/2018 08:03

The song lyrics are from a one hit wonder 90s band called "Daphne and Celeste" which was literally two girls named, you guessed it, Daphne and Celeste, who sang a song called "Ugly". The lyrics literally went "U-G-L-Y, you ain't got no alibi! You ugly!" That's what I first thought of too. I used to like the name Celeste and this band put me off it.

festivedogbone · 17/12/2018 11:51

I like Daphne. Penelope I'm not a fan of, I know two who are both called Penny and that just makes me think of dirty coins or "spending a penny".

bellanotte22 · 17/12/2018 11:53

Daphne is beautiful. I always liked Delphine after the Greek sanctuary Delphi but worried about Peppa's donkey friend Hmm

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/12/2018 12:00

Daphne was my front runner, I loved it but no one else did, including my OH.
I loved Daffy as a nickname

I find Delphine a little too much
Penelope I liked but way too popular for my preference now.

starkid · 17/12/2018 12:08

I like Daphne :)
