I’m looking for strong girls names and love the idea of historical or literary connotations. I’m finding the likes of Emmeline, Rosa are very popular as well as the Shakespearean Ophelia, Aurelia etc. I started looking at Greek or Roman gods as I liked Penelope and came across Daphne. She was a nymph in Greek mythology and there is also a famous author Daphne du Maurier. I’m just worried I like the association more than the name. Any thoughts?

Daphne is lovely. I don't know any and have never heard of the 90s group. My first association was Daphne from Mallory Towers - she was very pretty, pretended to be from a wealthy family and then I think stole various items, Mary Lou went to post them and was blown over a cliff and Daphne saved her life.

I promise that I do not read Enid Blyton these days.

Thanks everyone! I’m glad there are so many positive responses. Thinking about my original post, if anyone has any ideas for other historical/literary/mythological names, I’d love to hear them.

Agatha, but a very marmite name! The saint, the writer and, most importantly, taggie from Riders by Jilly Cooper
