Inspired by my watching of White Christmas earlier I’m interested in names people don’t think will make a come back.

My list so far
Edna

Doris
Vera

RustyBear interesting. I literally just rattled off a few names of people I know of my parents’ age (born in the late 40s/50s). Maybe people were more likely to be named after their parents then. When I was young, my school was full of Claires, Louises and Sarahs but you don’t hear of many of those nowadays so I think people look for more obscure names and I wouldn’t rule out the comeback of any name.

Edna, Ethel and Beryl. I hope.

Kokeshi123 · 06/12/2018 23:57

Names which are overwhelming associated with one person like Adolf or Elvis. I can see Myra being revived once Myra Hindley has faced---it has a pretty sound.

Names which have acquired other meanings like Dick, Gay and Fanny.

Other than those....? I think this thread makes it easy to see just how hard it is to rule out any name. Lots of "un-revive-able" names that are cited here (Stella, Lydia, Vera, Jean) are already being increasingly used. Growing up I would have been stunned to have met a young Florence, Beatrice, Ada or Elsie---now every school is heaving with them.

Yes, Walter nn ‘Wally’ (or Wal) is a family name and, oddly, I really like it but couldn’t possibly use it. Quite like ‘Fanny’ too BlushGrin

From some of the names suggested here, I can only assume that many posters are not regulars on the baby names forum and/or don't know any young children.

Don't get the insistence that Nigel won't come back. Objectively it's quite a distinguished name. I'd give it a generation and it will be top 100 again.

BettyCrook · 08/12/2018 07:30

Ingrid
Mary
Gemma

@elderflower14
Wilf is a wonderful name - You were ahead of your time.
My Dbro was born in the mid 80's and is called Jack. When he was born all the midwives cooede about how 'You never hear that name anymore' and a neighbour looked all confused and said 'What? Like the nursery rhyme?' Grin Grin

HellenaHandbasket · 09/12/2018 20:28

I know a couple of toddler elsies

Kokeshi123 · 10/12/2018 02:25

Elsie is a popular toddler name, seriously.

I have seen Ingrid asked about on here, and Gemma. I know a baby Mary. I know a school aged Lillian and Millicent.

Just goes to show!

BumDisease · 10/12/2018 02:55

I'm a Claire of 1985, don't see that coming back any time soon.

I went to school with a Harry in the late 90s/early 00s and we all thought it was a terribly old man name. How times have changed!

moredoll · 10/12/2018 03:13

Euphemia
Hilda
Gertrude
Senga
Lesley

Norman
Bernard
Algernon

TheKrakening3 · 10/12/2018 04:12

My daughter is Margaret and her best friend is Albert.

I really wanted to name DD2 Mildred or Millicent but DH vetoed them.

We also have a Harriet, Eliza and Otto in the family.

BasiliskStare · 10/12/2018 04:33

I love Stella and also John - had I had more children they would certainly have been in the mix.

Vitalogy · 10/12/2018 04:56

The classic David is overdue a return.

Marmite27 · 10/12/2018 05:02

DD2 was very nearly Lydia. Her middle names are Margret Anne. She was going to be Peter if she was a boy. DD1 is Erica Jane.

I know babies/toddlers named Florence, Dorothy, Elsie, Stanley, Douglas, Christopher, Violet. Lots listed here are really popular Shock

BasiliskStare · 10/12/2018 05:34

@Vitalogy My father , my best friend's husband , her father , her brother , my cousin, my godson - all called David. ( Not one of them is a "Dave" ) all David - I think it is a classic name & I agree with you.

Ladymargarethall · 10/12/2018 05:49

Janet, Christine, Pamela, Linda, Anne and Sandra were all in my 1950s classes, along with Maureen and Elaine and Margaret.
I'd say all of them will be back before long.

HopeGarden · 10/12/2018 05:56

The classic David is overdue a return.

David hasn’t really gone yet. It’s just not as mega popular as it was in the 1980s.
David was the 44th most popular boys name in 2017.

Zoflorabore · 10/12/2018 06:19

Well here was me all smug, was fully expecting my name to appear on the thread. Got to the penultimate post and there it is! Elaine.
I'm 40, named after my mum, I hate it and go by Lainey instead.

For the pp who mentioned "Audrey", my dd (7) watches loads of shite videos on YouTube which are mostly American.
I've heard this name lots and it's often pronounced "Odrey" which is what dd is planning on calling her new Baby Alive doll on her Christmas list.

Other dolly names here are

Avery
Stella
Darcy and Daisy (twins)
Lea
Rose
Lily

Zoflorabore · 10/12/2018 06:22

What I mean by above post is that I got to the end thinking great, nobody has mentioned my name, it can't be that bad etc and there it was Grin

BasilFaulty · 10/12/2018 07:10

Isn't it strange how it's hard to separate the name from the connotations.
I've been sitting here thinking about 'Vera' and I just can't separate it from a very old lady, so I can't hear the name itself if that makes sense. I think it's probably a lovely sound.

Vitalogy · 10/12/2018 07:33

I've just not heard anyone call there child David in recent times. I know someone with a son in their 20's, that's probably the youngest I know of. I'm sure lots of posters will come along now and say differently Grin

ViragoKnows · 10/12/2018 07:39

Same here Basil.
