I’m having a baby soon, and I want to call it something nice. I don’t know what though, as my best friend laughed at the suggestions.

Amie
Addison
Sierra
Serena
Jocasta
Matilda

Not to my taste but all reasonable names except for Addison as it makes me think of Addison's disease and maybe Sierra as to me that's a car everyone wanted in my youth.

TealTurnip · 25/11/2018 11:22

Amie is spelled Amy. Addison makes me think of Addison’s Disease. The others are ok imo.

sayitisntsojo · 25/11/2018 11:27

I love Matilda x

PhysaliaPhysalis · 25/11/2018 11:40

Jocasta was Oedipus' mother... I really wouldn't choose that one.

Serena and Matilda are nice.

Orlande · 25/11/2018 11:44

Matilda and Amy are nice.
Serena is a real name.
Jocasta isn't to my taste (it's a bit of a comedy example of posh/pretentious names eg "little Tarquin & Jocasta")

Addison and Sierra are dumb.

azulmariposa · 25/11/2018 12:32

Addison makes me think of Addison Lee taxis 😂

Icklepup · 25/11/2018 12:35

I like Amy

BumbleBeee69 · 25/11/2018 12:37

Matilda in my daughters class gets called Mati (Matty) Hmm

SoyDora · 25/11/2018 12:38

I don’t like Addison or Sierra. Not keen on Jocasta. Others are fine.

Astronica · 25/11/2018 12:40

I'm sorry your friend laughed at your suggestions. There are some really good names on your list - Amie, Serena and Matilda.

I'd cross off Addison. Sierra is okay, but not as good as Serena, and Jocasta has potential but I find it difficult to pronounce.

userabcname · 25/11/2018 12:44

Serena is lovely

Aragog · 25/11/2018 13:05

I like Matilda (none of the ones I've taught has been shortened to Matty; more Tilda, Tilly, etc) and Amie (though prefer it spelt Aimie or Amy)

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 25/11/2018 13:07

I had a close relative who died of Addison's - I'd be a bit Confused if I met a baby with that name. How about Alzheimer if it's a boy?

Blush Sorry.

IStandWithPosie · 25/11/2018 13:10

I’m having a baby soon, and I want to call it something nice.

Grin no! Don’t call it something nice, call it something horrible. Wink

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 25/11/2018 13:10

I love Amy. (But spell it Amy - or Aimee if you can claim some French ancestors or she’ll spend her life correcting people.)

Matilda is nice but very popular these days.

Addison I do like but the “Addison’s disease” does pop into my head.

Serena is pretty although I wouldn’t use it myself - not sure why.

Not keen on Sierra and Jocasta is a bit “trying to be posh”. Unless you are very posh in which case you’ll probably know 47 Jocastas.

GummyGoddess · 25/11/2018 13:10

Addison is a boys name, it's only recently had some people using it for their daughters.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 25/11/2018 13:11

Addison is terrible.
Matilda is nice enough. The rest aren't great.

deptfordgirl · 25/11/2018 13:11

Why did she laugh at them? I particularly love Serena and Matilda. Matilda is very popular so hardly laughable!

PaddyF0dder · 25/11/2018 13:14

I thought “Amie” was “Arnie” when I first read it.

As in Schwarzenegger.

Don’t mis-spell names in dumb cutesy ways. It’s spelled “Amy”.

CatherineTheLate · 25/11/2018 13:18

I quite like Addison. Probably if you had said Maddison more people would have liked it because it's more familiar.

MikeUniformMike · 25/11/2018 13:20

Amie- I initially read this as Arnie. Amy was hugely popular in the 1980s and 1990s so is a bit dated.
Addison - No.
Sierra - No. 1980s family car.
Serena - yes
Jocasta - yes
Matilda - very popular.

C0untDucku1a · 25/11/2018 13:24

Theyre fine, apart from the spelling of amie. Unless youre going for the pronunciation of a, as in apple? a (apple) mie???

ScreamingValenta · 25/11/2018 13:26

Jocasta would be my choice.

HopeGarden · 25/11/2018 13:29

Amie - I prefer the spelling “Amy”
Addison - not keen, it’s too androgynous for my liking
Sierra - ok
Serena - nice
Jocasta - no. Oedipus’ mum.
Matilda - ok

Pemba · 25/11/2018 13:31

Addison is far from nice it's an ugly name, even for a boy. It's very obviously a surname as it ends in 'son' and not even an attractive surname.

Serena, on the other hand, is lovely. It's a mystery to me how you can have them both on the same list!
