Thea.

I've recently heard the name Thea, and it sounds so lovely and mystical. However, I've heard that it's been rapidly gaining popularity over the last few years, which worries me because I don't want a name that will be eventually be common. I'm not searching for a name that's ultra rare, but I think it's nicer to have a slightly unique name. What do you guys think?

It is beautiful. I've never heard it before.

RCohle · 23/11/2018 01:47

I don't think it's that common. Have you checked the stats?

moredoll · 23/11/2018 01:49

It's lovely. It is being use more though.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 23/11/2018 01:54

There are no guarantees over what becomes common. I have a 21 year old Milly and my bestie has a 21 year old Grace. We were very smug about our unusual and cool name choices. Hmm

Mrstwiddle · 23/11/2018 01:55

It’s nice, but what about Theo, short for Theodora?

Choccywoccyhooha · 23/11/2018 02:02

It's lovely. I have only ever met one and she must be about 37 by now.

brookshelley · 23/11/2018 02:08

Love it and wanted to use it but DH vetoed. I have met a baby Thea recently though. I’d have pronounced it “thay-a” not “thee-a”

Cbeebiesrehab · 23/11/2018 05:22

I don’t think it’s too popular, I know two-a newborn and a 7 year old. However my concern would be how many people are lazy with pronunciation and it would become ‘fear’

ShanghaiDiva · 23/11/2018 05:26

I know one Thea - 12 years old.
Beautiful name.

AlbertWinestein · 23/11/2018 05:27

I have an about to turn 18 Ava. I was so super smug about how unique the name was. Goddamn you, Reese Witherspoon!

In other words, you never know how names are going to trend so go with what you love

Frances003 · 23/11/2018 05:40

I work in a baby unit and have only heard of one! Then depends on your area I guess!
Lovely name

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 23/11/2018 05:43

I know a Thea pronounced " th ee a", short for Anthea. She is a lovely person, and I like how the name sounds a lot. I cant see it being common as Ive not met a small person with it.

However I have a slight reserve, as with Theo, about calling a child "God"! But the names are lovely.

Fezzik · 23/11/2018 05:51

Lovely name. I know two - a beautiful 40 something woman who pronounces it "Tay a", and my 90 something neighbour who pronounces it "Thee a". I suspect the latter is short for Dorothea.

Like many grandma names it may become popular but if you love it, does that matter?

LadyB49 · 23/11/2018 05:56

It's lovely.
Also Trea pronounced Tray-a

ArtisanPopcorn · 23/11/2018 05:56

Going by this graph it's fairly popular and climbing pretty steeply:

ArsenalsPlayingAtHome · 23/11/2018 06:10

I think it's lovely.

It probably will become popular, but you'll be able to be smug when all around you, mothers are calling out "Thea" to their toddlers, and you rock up with your 11 year old! Grin

Cherrysherbet · 23/11/2018 06:16

I only know of one. There are no Thea’s in my Daughters school.

It’s a beautiful name.

Ploppymoodypants · 23/11/2018 06:18

I know a grown up one in her 50’s who is cool and elegant and an alround genuine nice kind person.

I know 2 small little girls (both called Dorothea) who go by Thea. It’s a lovely name, we considered it. I do think it is growing in popularity though. But does that matter?

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 23/11/2018 06:20

I knew one, pronouned Taya, at school 30 years ago.
Call her Dorothea, Thea for short. Then she can revert to her full name if desired.

newdaylight · 23/11/2018 06:25

I know of quite a few Theas of toddler age. I wouldn't say it's a common name though, but not particularly rare either.

50th most used name of 2017, just below Lucy and above Zoe

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/11/2018 07:05

No and No - to answer your question.

Thea is beautiful.

FogCutter · 23/11/2018 07:05

Its lovely and I've never met any!

KeepCalm · 23/11/2018 07:10

Is it not the name of one of Robbie Williams kids?

DD1's name is one that we were told EVERYONE would have. We know no others.

DD2 was a slightly more unusual name. There will be 3 in her year at high school Hmm

Don't over think Op because you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. If you love it, use it!

Bythebeach · 23/11/2018 07:10

Gorgeous name......I don’t have any girls so had to use it for the dog Shock. She’s 2.

ImogenTubbs · 23/11/2018 07:12

I worked with a Thea (early 40s), and know one other adult Thea. I also know a 4yo Thea. Lovely name and not hugely common.
