Dinah?

Dinah is a pretty old name that never seems to have come back into fashion. DH says there used to be a rude Rugby song about a Dinah, and thinks people may remember that. My DM says it sounds like a Deep South name from the 1920s. It sounds a lovely name to me. Never met a Dinah though!

How do you pronounce it?

RedDeadRoach · 22/11/2018 18:22

Reminds me of the demon headmaster.

Shadow1234 · 22/11/2018 18:26

Are you pronouncing it 'diner' or 'Deena' just out of interest

Clawdy · 22/11/2018 18:29

"Diner" like the old song my dad used to sing "Dinah, is there anyone finer, in the state of Carolina....."

I love the name Dinah. I had a dog called Dinah years ago. I had children late so gave a lot of pets my favourite names.

I pronounced it Die-nah, but not sure if that’s correct?

Clawdy · 22/11/2018 18:34

Yes, definitely not Deena.

It’s a biblical name. In the bible she was raped. So that’s why I wouldn’t use it.

DailyFailAreTwats · 22/11/2018 18:37

I know a little one. She has a brother called Edmund. I like it!

Blondielongie · 22/11/2018 18:38

It's the name of the cat from Alice in wonderland

CalamityJane10 · 22/11/2018 18:39

I like it, only times I’ve heard it are the cat in Alice in Winderland or the Enid Blyton character in the Adventure series.

LemonChickenThyme · 22/11/2018 18:39

@RedDeadRoach

Yes, me too! It’s an ok name I guess Smile

Shadow1234 · 22/11/2018 18:39

Tbh, I think it can be pronounced either way, but I much prefer the 'Diner' sound - and I think its a lovely name.

Its a bit like Dana - could be either 'Darna' or 'Dayna'

CalamityJane10 · 22/11/2018 18:39

*wonderland

Escolar · 22/11/2018 18:40

It's OK but I prefer Diana personally.

Scissor · 22/11/2018 18:42

Love it, ex MIL was the Princess version so couldn't use it, have two daughters with 2 syllable ending same sound names. They're very happy. I'm so happy for you.

lebkuchenlover · 22/11/2018 18:58

Why does it need the h? I prefer Dina.

bridgetreilly · 22/11/2018 19:02

I've never liked it, sorry. It sounds like it should be Diana, but somehow it's less interesting.

Sophronia · 22/11/2018 19:58

Love it.

Peachbubble · 22/11/2018 20:08

I like it. Dinah Sheridan was the actress who played the mother in the original Railway Children film wasn't she? I also like Dana (Dayna).

INeedNewShoes · 22/11/2018 20:11

I love the name. I know a 2 year old Dinah (Diner pronunciation) and she's fab and the name suits her.

DownWentTheFlag · 22/11/2018 20:12

Makes me think of the Demon Headmaster as well. I like it.

RavenWings · 22/11/2018 20:13

I really like it. I love the name Diana though, so I would choose that over Dinah. Dana is nice too but I can't separate it from the Irish Eurovision woman - I think that is probably country specific, though.

MrsChristianTrevelyanGrey · 22/11/2018 20:27

I went to school with a Dinah, hers was spelt Dina though, I think I prefer with the H...I'm in my twenties now and haven't heard another one but think it's nice

YeOldeTrout · 22/11/2018 21:02

My great-gran. Her name on birth certif was something like Mary Louise (!)

Die-nuh in my accent. No rrr as in Diner.

IdblowJonSnow · 22/11/2018 21:06

I really like it - and with the h too. Cool name.
