Dinah?

Dinah is a pretty old name that never seems to have come back into fashion. DH says there used to be a rude Rugby song about a Dinah, and thinks people may remember that. My DM says it sounds like a Deep South name from the 1920s. It sounds a lovely name to me. Never met a Dinah though!

It's die-nuh in my accent and I like the name but it reminds me of the cop in No Offence. She's a good character though.

Rachelover40 · 22/11/2018 21:55

I like name, had a good friend called Dinah. It's classy and unusual.

Clawdy · 22/11/2018 22:07

That's what I thought, it's a little bit different.

Isn’t there a character in Noddy called Dinah? I like it Smile

nordstrom · 22/11/2018 22:46

I like it. Reminds me of one of my favourite books - The Red Tent.

rainbowquack · 22/11/2018 22:47

Dina-sauté

rainbowquack · 22/11/2018 22:47

Dina-saur even 😳

VisitorsEntrance · 22/11/2018 22:49

I love it.
However I’ve only even known cats with that name.

Skyejuly · 22/11/2018 22:53

I love it. I think of the red tent x

BetterEatCheese · 22/11/2018 23:06

It's a biblical name, she was the sister of Joseph (with the coat) and his brothers. There's a great book with her as the main character .. can't remember what it's called

BetterEatCheese · 22/11/2018 23:07

Oh that's it, The Red Tent

Picknickers · 22/11/2018 23:32

I love Dinah. To me it's quirkier and more sophisticated than Diana.

Failingat40 · 23/11/2018 01:48

Dinah-saur? It's the first thing I thought of.

It grates me. I can't stand names that aren't pronounced the way they're spelt.

Ultimately your choice but other peoples opinions are what you're dd is going to have to live with.

moredoll · 23/11/2018 02:00

Sorry, don't like it. Something cartoonish about it.

RedDwarves · 23/11/2018 06:22

Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah...

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 23/11/2018 07:18

Yes it's a very crude rugby song about a woman called Dinah.

Was the first thing that came to mind, but, I grew up in a rugby mad place where some idiot would start singing it drunk every Saturday night after a game.

Obviously not the same everywhere.

stellarfox · 23/11/2018 07:20

I know one Dinah but it’s pronounced dee-nah so that’s how I’ve always pronounced it. It’s a biblical name and just saw someone else mentioned the book called the red tent. Excellent book if you haven’t read it. If you’re pronouncing it diner I do kind of think of food diners so I’d probably pronounce it dee-nah. Might be worth researching what’s the original pronunciation

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 23/11/2018 07:32

Lovely, classy name.

But, like PP, I also pronounce it 'die-nah' - not 'diner' (with the heavy 'rrr')

starkid · 23/11/2018 16:41

I really love Dinah (pronounced die-nah), first heard it from Alice in Wonderland and think it's gorgeous and classy

liquidrevolution · 23/11/2018 18:27

I love it. Also like Deanna (dee-anna)

LollyLollington · 23/11/2018 18:33

I love it. It's a bit different but not completely out there. I remember Dinah Doll from Noddy. Plus there's also Dinah Rose QC!

daisypond · 23/11/2018 18:39

I like it. I think of the biblical character too - her story is imagined in The Red Tent, as people have said.

emwithme · 23/11/2018 19:39

It was on our shortlist (lost out to Matilda in the end). It's a nice classic name.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 23/11/2018 19:51

I knew a Dinah (Dye-naah) She'd be late 60s now I think. Lovely, vibrant woman. Very upright but with an outrageous sense of fun.
