Xanthe is much nicer than Ianthe.

BillyJoel · 22/11/2018 22:28

Cicely is Fab. Named my youngest this after the lovely liquorice flower Sweet Cicely.

iwantasofa · 22/11/2018 22:29

All are good except Salome!

TatianaLarina · 22/11/2018 23:01

they’re the kind of try-hard names that thankfully I only ever hear on MN!

Thankfully I only ever hear this ‘try-hard’ nonsense on MN.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 22/11/2018 23:05

Cicely or Paloma.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 22/11/2018 23:06

Do you like Xanthe?

Babdoc · 22/11/2018 23:06

Relieved that you’ve drawn a veil over Salome. Or should that be seven veils..!

thighofrelief · 22/11/2018 23:22

How about Artemis, Allegra, Antigone or Ariadne.

moredoll · 23/11/2018 02:10

I like Apolline and Cicely.
Don't like Salome.

Pemba · 23/11/2018 02:37

The trouble with Cicely spelt that way is some people might think that it rhymes with nicely! Cecily is better, or Cecile, Cecilia.

Sungura · 23/11/2018 05:24

Cicely. ❤

RiverTam · 23/11/2018 07:49

I really don’t think anyone thinks Cicely rhymes with nicely.

I think if you go for Cicely rather than Cecily she’ll get called Sissy at school, though - we’ll, maybe for her whole life, which I wouldn’t be keen on.

Messalena · 23/11/2018 08:07

OK... our list as it stands:

Antigone
Apolline
Cicely
Ianthe
Paloma
Pandora
Anoushka (new addition)

Middle name will be a simple family name (probably one of: Helen, Violet, Kate, Gwen, Marin).

Any favourites or favourite combos?

Pandora Helen

Taffeta · 23/11/2018 09:01

Cicely will be shortened to Sissy
Love Ianthe - DH vetoed for our DD
Paloma just think of the singer

Icklepup · 23/11/2018 09:01

Anoushka Marin

Taffeta · 23/11/2018 09:03

Oh and unless you’re vair posh virtually no one will pronounce Antigone right

Taffeta · 23/11/2018 09:04

I’d go Ianthe Kate

It’s good if the first name is unusual to give them a more common middle name

YeOldeTrout · 23/11/2018 09:09

They aren't my taste... but they aren't terrible.
Paloma is only one I would know how to pronounce right. But it means pigeon (I think?)

Pandora makes me think of the awful Adrian Mole books, I can't get over that.

What about Athena or Ariadne? Juno used to be popular on MN.

Loyaultemelie · 23/11/2018 09:31

Cicely Violet

RiverTam · 23/11/2018 10:07

YeOldeTrout

Pandora!
I adore ya!
I implore ye
don't ignore me

Adrian's valentine ditty to Pandora. Can't remember whether that was in the same book where she spelt his name Adrain with a sparkler on Bonfire night.

Taffeta I do think that anyone who can pronounce Penelope correctly (ie everyone) can learn very quickly how to pronounce Antigone correctly.
