Is Amelia overused?

SPR1107 · 02/11/2018 14:00

Baby number 2 on its way. We never had a girls name for baby number 1, and we're having the same problem for number 2.

DH absolutely loves Olivia - I like it too, but we know at least 6 children with variations of it (Olivia, olive, liv etc). And my mum has a very strong London accent, in a non London area.. the name will constantly be Alivia or Livia.

I love Florence, DH isn't feeling it, no matter how much I've tried to influence it.

Me and DH both think Amelia is a nice enough name, I know it's in the top 10, which doesn't bother me too much.. we already have a George after all... but I was just wondering if it's overused in other people's opinions? Only because, I actually don't know a single other Amelia, even though it's classed as a popular name.

Also..

Amelia Rose R
Amelia Willow R
Amelia Florence R

How do they sound?

How about Amelie for a less used alternative? Booth are pretty names I think though and I like all your middle name choices too!

Scientistic · 02/11/2018 14:15

I do think it's very overused. Wasn't it number 1 on more than one occasion? I know so, so many.

AandB201517 · 02/11/2018 14:41

I love Amelia, wanted to name my daughter that (only have sons though) but sadly it's so overused.

I prefer Amelia Florence

TheVortex · 02/11/2018 14:44

How about Constance know as Connie.

Constance Willow R is nice.

Santaisgettingbusy · 02/11/2018 14:47

Dd has it for a mn. Don't know a single Amelia.

Moominfan · 02/11/2018 14:51

If you love it go for it

daisypond · 02/11/2018 15:59

I like Amelia. I don't like Amelie at all, though. Florence for a middle name out of your choices. Or would you consider Rose for a first name? That would be my top choice out of your names.

daisypond · 02/11/2018 16:00

I meant to say, I don't know any Amelias.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 02/11/2018 16:01

I don’t know any Amelia’s. I prefer it spelt Emilia though.
We have an Amelie who goes by Mila.

MrsMrsMrsMrs · 02/11/2018 16:02

There's only one Amelia I know, but two Amelies. I love both names. I also like spelling Emilia

E20mom · 02/11/2018 16:07

It's used a lot because it's a nice name. If you love it then use it.

BuildingQuote · 02/11/2018 16:08

Dd has 3 in her year but maybe that’s unusual . It does suggest it’s popular in some places anyway! But then several other names are too

Ilovewillow · 02/11/2018 16:08

I know several Amelia's (although older) and one Emilia which I think has a nicer ring! I'm a little biased but willow is lovely! Amelie also gorgeous - our willow was nearly an Amelie!

E20mom · 02/11/2018 16:10

I agree re Amelie. I think it's a much nicer name.

bellanotte22 · 02/11/2018 16:12

I know several Amelias and Amelies. It's super popular. But if you like it then go for it.

GMtoBe · 02/11/2018 16:14

My dd is Amelia. It was in the top 5 when we named her but we've always loved the name. Go for it if you like it! I like Amelia Florence

Whisky2014 · 02/11/2018 16:15

Yes I know 4!

EleanorofCastile · 02/11/2018 16:19

I don’t think it’s overused, I know only one young one (and two in their late 30s).

Much prefer it to Amelie.

Sliderz · 02/11/2018 16:26

I think Amelia and Olivia are the two most popular names aren't they? Lovely names and shouldn't affect you if you don't mind that they're so popular but I personally would want something else.

SPR1107 · 02/11/2018 16:43

I can't take to Amelie, to me it sounds like people saying Emily wrong.. maybe an accent thing?

To the PP who suggested Rose as a first name.. me and DH both love it, but a close friends baby was born very prematurely and passed away, and it's her name.

Thanks everyone for your views, we have a fair bit of time to decide fortunately, but it's a topic that's always in thought!

Emilia is nice and maybe slightly less popular. Sounds pretty much the same though. Rose is nice but a bit of a filler middle name now so I'd go for Florence for a less common combination.

SuperstarDJ · 02/11/2018 19:58

It is very popular according to lists but I’ve never actually come across an Amelia, of any age, and I go to quite a lot of different baby and toddler classes etc. I’ve met quite a few of the other suggestions though of various ages - Florence, Olivia, Amelie, Connie.

BlessedMamma · 03/11/2018 18:15

Our 2yo daughter is called Emilia and so far we've only met one other little girl called Amelia. I was concerned it was too popular too but I'm so glad we went with it. If you love it, go for it.

EthelHallowsBroomstick · 03/11/2018 18:34

I know a lot tbh. It is a nice name though...

LivininaBox · 03/11/2018 21:32

I have nothing against a classic popular name, like George, but personally I think Amelia has the problem of being both popular and trendy. In 40 years time it will stand out as being obviously of a certain era. So personally I would avoid.
