What does everyone think of Lillymae?
DP suggested it, I'm not too sure
Thanks!

Ally, Leah and Hadley are sooooo much better. Hadley is unusual but I actually really like it and it’s like Hadley Freeman who writes for the Guardian.

UserNotBot · 01/11/2018 18:19

Leah and Hadley are much better.

Ally - What would it be short for?

Lily/Lilly/Lillie - May/Mae/Mai is boring. Millions of them.
May and Rose are just filler names, and always used because 'named after a relative'

Tuesday811 · 01/11/2018 19:40

Ally would probably just be Ally - not short for anything in particular as there aren't any longer versions we love. Possibly Aliana or Alexis at a push

DH's cousin named her DD Lily-Mae. I love the name Lily but it is very popular and I don't like the hyphenation and it's put me off choosing Lily if we had a DD in future.

LightDrizzle · 01/11/2018 19:57

Leah is nice. Not keen on the others. Lily-Mae is perfect for a nice Jersey heifer. Does DH come from farming stock?

applesauce1 · 01/11/2018 20:15

I agree with PP- I'd read Ally as al-eye, as in cooperative. Allie or Ali are both really nice.

Soubriquet · 01/11/2018 20:20

I like Leah
Hadley is ok but prefer Harper
Allie....not sure

Lily is lovely but it would have to be Lily and not Lilymae

greendale17 · 01/11/2018 20:26

I’m not sure you’ll find anyone on Mumsnet that likes it and yet it is VERY popular.

^Only popular with certain demographics.

Anyway it is common and chavvy

MaisyPops · 01/11/2018 21:03

Only popular with certain demographics.
Of this i would be inclined to agree.
Out of all the something-mae something-rai etc students I've taught, one has been different to expectations and typical associations.

It's a trend thing a bit like a few years ago when the school I was at had a glut of y8/9 girls with cs turned to ks with a smattering of h and ys for good measure.

So Courtney became khortnee and Nicole became nykhole.

Y7 were largely unaffected by this trend and it wasn't a thing in y10/11 either. Clearly a naming pattern that came into fashion and then went. The downside is that they're stuck with youneek spellings for life.

Kokeshi123 · 01/11/2018 23:44

Leah is nice. Hadley sounds very American and try-hard. Allie is OK but sounds like a nickname. I would put a full name like Alice on the birth certificate.

Zoflorabore · 02/11/2018 04:23

Anything with a "Mae/May" sounds a bit meh, it's the default middle name for eleventy billion little girls.

Both names are lovely separately.

This week during the same shopping trip i heard "Nevaeh Mae" and "Denver Mae" being screeched at little girls ( both wearing blingy earrings and with hardly any hair ) and unfortunately i wasn't a bit surprised.

Rebecca36 · 02/11/2018 05:13

Lily and May are both good but putting them together (& your spelling) is soppy. Sounds like something you'd call a poodle or a rag doll with a bonnet, not a real live little girl.

Alfie190 · 02/11/2018 05:40

You need to imagine it on an adult, as she will be one day.

And clearly it is absolutely ridiculous and naff.

MsTSwift · 02/11/2018 05:53

There were several Chardonnays at dds old dance class it’s not an urban myth.

bubbles092 · 02/11/2018 05:59

Anything that ends with Mae, I dislikeZ

neurotransmittens · 02/11/2018 06:05

Tuesday811 I knew a Hadley, although she will be in her 20's now. Lovely name to me with no negative connotations.

Lilymae in any shape or form, just no.

Sungura · 02/11/2018 06:58

Ernest Hemingway's wife was Hadley, and so is my niece.
I like Leah the best of your list, or just Lily.

FieryGhoulie · 02/11/2018 07:04

Nope. Don't do that to her. Lilly is ok alone as a first name.

Scientistic · 02/11/2018 14:12

Incredibly popular where I live. Double barrelled possibly but sounds the same.

NotANotMan · 02/11/2018 18:26

Lilymae is dreadful. Ally is ok but should be short for something. Leah is nice. Hadley is ok.

ladycarlotta · 02/11/2018 18:43

Leah is good, not keen on Ally if it isn't short for anything. Hadley I really like - Hadley Richardson was Hemingway's first wife.

2128Cl · 03/11/2018 23:31

I would go for Lily May/Mae? Really like Ally, too!
