Silver for a girl?

WhereistheWit · 29/10/2018 14:18

What does everyone think of the name Silver for a girl? the name came to me with a sudden rush of emotion and I’ve always wanted to name my baby after something to do with the moon and the Silver brightness of the moon seems perfect.

I know it’s most likely a marmite name and negative views probably won’t put me off too much. Also any ideas of a middle name to go with it?

Silva is a proper name, it is lovely.

Eleanor90 · 29/10/2018 16:23

I know a little girl called Silver! I like the quirkiness of it.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 29/10/2018 17:53

I prefer Sylvie or Sylvia.

tablebrush · 29/10/2018 20:51

@WhereistheWit would love to know your boys names as I love your taste! Are they too outing?

cece · 29/10/2018 20:59

Makes me think of Long John Silver

Saisong · 29/10/2018 21:07

I also know a Silva, it is beautiful.

Also know a male Sylvan

Arianrhod not Arianrod. Welsh mythical character. Pron Arr-YAN-rhod
and bear in mind that Rh is a letter in Welsh that is not the same as R.

Silva or silver is lovely , very pretty and unusual

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 29/10/2018 21:39

I have only ever know one Sylvie and I always thought it was a lovely name, it has a different vibe to Sylvia. I think Sylva looks like a spelling error and Silver should have 'Long John' in front of it.

Aalaaya · 29/10/2018 21:48

Love it how pretty!

rebelrosie12 · 29/10/2018 21:50

We know a little girl with the name silver. She's ace!

NC4Now · 29/10/2018 21:50

I know a Silver in her 40s. I always thought she had the coolest name.

HouseOnTheLake · 29/10/2018 22:14

I liked Silver but actually Silva sounds - looks - even nicer! Lovely name.

AliCanTea · 29/10/2018 22:20

Love it :)

WhereistheWit · 29/10/2018 22:34

@tablebrush I don’t mind I only use mumsnet for the antenatal clubs and lurking aibu so people know me anyway! My eldest is Skyler. He was meant to be Skye if he was a girl and we loved the proper spelling Schuyler which means Scholar and just decided to spell it an easier way. And my youngest boy is called Blake.

Another girls name I loved was Azura but DP hates it!

Thanks for all the feedback so glad people like it! Just need to convince DP now as he’s only on a maybe but I love it and feel settled on the name!

I like it and quite unusual too!
I think most names are marmite these days. You've just got to not care what most people think.

Icklepup · 30/10/2018 10:01

Silva is lovely

17caterpillars1mouse · 30/10/2018 10:18

I really like it. Think I prefer the suggested Silva spelling though

I rather like Silver. I don't think Silva works, though -. It's a Portuguese surname, and that's the first think I would think of. It also has nothing to do with silver. Silva means "of the woods or forests", as in Sylvia, or Sylvester.

GraceMarks · 30/10/2018 14:20

If you want the cultural references... Silver was the name of the Lone Ranger's horse. It was a TV show made in the 1950s but repeated multiple times since then - there was also that dreadful film version a few years ago starring Johnny Depp! It's unlikely that any of his peers will get that reference or even anyone under the age of 40, although you might get older people making "Hi-ho Silver, away!" jokes.

As pp has pointed out, Sylvia/Sylvie/Silva aren't actually anything to do with the precious metal, or the colour, but refer to forests. If it's the meaning of the word that you like, you'd need to stick with Silver, whereas if it's the sound of it, I think Sylvie is nicer. I actually like Azura better - shame your DP doesn't like it!

Ohyesiam · 30/10/2018 14:25

The surname from the Portuguese side of my family is Da Silva, and I used Silva as a middle name for my dd. I really love it and sometimes wish I’d used it as a first name. We do call her Silva every now and then, and everyone who has heard it loved it.
I know it’s not Silver, but so similar .
Go for it op.

Ohyesiam · 30/10/2018 14:27

I should rtf before posting!

blueskiesandforests · 30/10/2018 14:29

If, as others say, Silva is a real name go for that.

I'm surprised nobody's already said it, so maybe its just me, but my first thought was that silver is 2nd place.

Bronze, silver, gold...

riotlady · 30/10/2018 14:30

I love it, I do have quirky tastes though!
