Traditional but not super popular....

Hi ladies,
I'm booked for a caesarean in 5 weeks and we are struggling for a boy's name. We have a girl name sorted.
We like traditional names but a lot of the golden oldies are so popular these days that if we had a boy it would be in a class with 5 other Arthur/Albert/William etc.
I wanted Rex but my husband doesn't like it. He likes Matthew but I think of a boy I miscarried at 20 weeks as Matthew in my head as we had that down for him.
All suggestions welcome. Middle name for a boy would be Joseph.
Thanks! X

Gawd boys names are crap aren’t they 😩

wowfudge · 29/10/2018 10:58

What a horrible thing to say! Nothing beats a traditional boy's name imo.

When I was choosing my DS name, I knew I wanted a solid, traditional (bog standard/boring I suppose) name that would suit all his life stages. It's always been a top ten name, since medieval times. There's one other with the same name in his preschool class. I've been a teacher for 6 years and have only ever taught one Thomas. The names I've noticed there being more than one in a class/yeargroup have consistently been:
Benjamin/Ben
Zachary/Zac/Zach
Charlie
Jack
Ellis
Leighton/Layton
Jacob
Isaac
Alfie
Oscar
Archie
Evan
Alex/Alexander

FWIW I think Joseph is a cracking first name, I wouldn't relegate it to the middle if it's a name you both agree with

I have a Callum. He's three and a half now and the only other one we've met is 15! I love it. It's a strong, traditional name but not too popular. I also think Joseph is a fab name.

lozengeoflove · 29/10/2018 17:47

If I could use Joseph, I would. It’s a great name.

hoppyfarmer · 29/10/2018 18:04

The sad thing about Joseph is that it would have been our first name choice but sadly my uncle Joe passed away in February at 56. He left 3 daughters and we didn't want to use the name in case they decide to. If he was still here we'd have used it without a thought but now it feels like we'd be taking something from them. I haven't even asked what they think as I'd hate for them to feel under pressure to say yes.

I'm also a bit put off my husband's first choice of Jonathan as it's his Dad's name and it didn't help that my 41 year old friend immaturely said "but Jonny is like a condom!"
