I’ve loved this name for ages and has been at the top of my name list ( I was weird and had a baby names list before I was even ttc) for years but have noticed it being mentioned a lot around here so is it faddy all of a sudden? Also what are your general opinions on the name?

I like it - not enough to make a shortlist of my own, but would think it nice on someone else.

It wasn't always thus. DB would've been Margot had he been a girl - how we hooted when we discovered this, at the height of The Good Life!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 31/10/2018 22:59

I know a couple in not so trendy NE England parts. If you love it though use it .

ProfessorMoody · 31/10/2018 23:01

It's cute!

Sungura · 01/11/2018 07:41

Margaux or Margo spellings are acceptable, too. That eliminates the silly maggot excuse. It's a good name, IMO. Marmite indeed. But I personally think it's a name for a clever girl, smarter than her peers, perhaps, who's a bit ornery. I'd like such a girl as I favor them ornery. Haha!

Another2day · 01/11/2018 08:15

The Margaux spelling is popular in France. It does indeed avoid the Mar-gott pronunciation by non French speakers

newrubylane · 01/11/2018 12:14

I love it but have the same reservations as you. I wouldn't have thought it was that popular, but I've seen it mentioned so many times on here!

newrubylane · 01/11/2018 12:16

OP, are you me? - I just reread your post. I too had a name list before I was even thinking about actually having babies!

L0lacabana · 01/11/2018 16:46

newrubylane glad I’m not the only sad one here XD

I like it. Vintage and reminds me of the chalet school books.

MrsStrowman · 07/11/2018 13:38

I really like it, it's not too girly, but still strong and feminine

MrsStrowman · 07/11/2018 13:39

I wonder if all these opinions on what a Margot looks like/does, apply to Margot Robbie?...

minimausi · 07/11/2018 13:45

I don't like it, sorry, especially when pronounced Mar-gott as it is in many European countries, outside of France.

Margaret or Margareta work much better in English!

MashNpeas · 07/11/2018 13:54

Getting very popular - I know 3 born in the last 6 months

3out · 07/11/2018 19:54

When I think of Margot (pronouncing the T) I think fondly of a rotund elderly lady. When I hear Margo I think Leadbetter (who is also fabulous)

Namechangemum100 · 07/11/2018 20:02

Maggot...sorry

Thissameearth · 07/11/2018 20:19

I know two little girls called this (both around 1). First time I heard it I really didn’t like it and was quite bewildered why anyone would chose it and think I covered up by muttering oh lovely very French (thinking Margaux) but I got face scrunched up by (posh) parent in return. I realise now it’s more likely Margot. I was really surprised at anyone choosing It. But now I know a lovely little girl with a lovely (unpretentious) mum and I quite like it and think it suits them. I wouldn’t chose it myself but I think differently about it now.

It didn’t make me think of maggot at all, more 70s middles class suburban housewife, but I’m reformed now!

Berniethefastestmilkwoman · 07/11/2018 20:32

I really like it. Have never met one or heard of anyone naming their baby Margot. I'd go for it.

LeeMiller · 07/11/2018 20:42

There is a MN thread on Margot almost every day at the moment so on that basis I think it's having or about to have a moment, and will probably date because of that. Margot Robbie is probably partly responsible for the revival.

Personally I prefer Marguerite or Margaret (great nickname potential).

MonkeyToucher · 08/11/2018 10:21

Depends how bothered you are by its current popularity - I live in the SE and know 5 Margots under the age of 3...

Wombat222 · 08/11/2018 10:26

Love it!

Kylieemilyj · 12/11/2018 18:11

I think i like Margot but i would always think of the character from despicable me? which may not be a bad thing though
