Opinions on Margot?

I’ve loved this name for ages and has been at the top of my name list ( I was weird and had a baby names list before I was even ttc) for years but have noticed it being mentioned a lot around here so is it faddy all of a sudden? Also what are your general opinions on the name?

I'm not keen on the two pronunciations, Margo and Margott. It also seems to be becoming very fashionable quickly.

RustyBear · 28/10/2018 19:22

The discussion on the pronunciation reminds me of the (probably apocryphal) story about Margot Asquith’s response to the sex-symbol actress Jean Harlow’s pronouncing the ‘t’ at the end of her name
‘No, dear - the ‘t’ is silent - as in Harlow.’

I love the idea of maggot and go as nicknames. Using maggot affectionately would also help with any future reading in schools.
I think we’re set on Margot Elisabeth (Elisabeth as a middle name as it’s both mine and DH’s mums’ name)

Oops *teasing and meant to say probably.

I love it! Interestingly OP the name you've chosen for your baby is top of the list for ours due in March! Great taste!

3out · 28/10/2018 20:26

Have never heard of Margot Robbie. She must be pretty inspiring though :)

Sexnotgender · 29/10/2018 20:25

Love it.

TheFantasticFixit · 29/10/2018 20:27

I have a Margot! Frequently called Maggot too 😆

HeronLanyon · 29/10/2018 20:32

Absolutely love it. I think it is feminine strong and ‘french’ without being pretentious. (Not suggesting everything french is p!).

L0lacabana · 31/10/2018 16:33

3out not so much inspiring from what I know (I may be wrong), but she is a very famous (and insanely pretty) actress

Not very famous, famous in the now

I like it lots but here in London there have been a few babies on my radar with it as a first or middle name, about 5 I’d say....

3out · 31/10/2018 17:48

Lolacabana, I just mean she’s been the inspiration for the name :)

avocadoincident · 31/10/2018 17:52

I love it and it reminds me of my favourite 'Shoe People' character the ballet shoe called Margot from when I was little

L0lacabana · 31/10/2018 18:43

3out oh just me being an idiot! Sorry Blush

I must be out of the loop, had no idea this is popular in parts of the U.K. I work in education and haven't met a child Margot ever.
I associate it with old ladies and Margot from the Good Life. Would never think to use it for a baby. Wouldn't be my choice.

Scottishgirl85 · 31/10/2018 22:03

My sister is Margot, mid 30s. Hated it as a child (maggot etc) but loves it now x

ReginaPhalange89 · 31/10/2018 22:10

I can't stand it, sorry ! 🙈 I just don't get it. Like someone else said it's a name that crops up on here a lot but I've never actually met a young Margot. I do know some older ones though.

I just think it's very faddy and because of Margot Robbie. Can't picture it on a person under 50 at all lol

L0lacabana · 31/10/2018 22:14

reginaphalange89 bump is definitely going to be Margot so you’re welcome to a picture once she’s here Smile!!

I've got a Margot (6 weeks old!) I can't say why but I was drawn to this name whilst I was pregnant and nothing else would stick the same way this did...I think the name has a lot of personality to it. It also goes nicely with my sons name (Henry).

I know one other Margot in my sons nursery (he's 2) - I think it is becoming more popular but I don't think it's going to hit the top 15 any time soon!

brads88 · 31/10/2018 22:47

Oh - and in terms of picturing her - she has dark brown hair, blue eyes - and is getting increasingly chubbier cheeks!!

Poppyinagreenfield · 31/10/2018 22:49

Try it as Margo. Seems to be popular in the states.

RiddleyW · 31/10/2018 22:52

I know a baby Margot and actually she’s a Margot Elizabeth. I think it’s lovely.
