Sweet and vintage or musty and old?

What's with all these ridiculous suggestions these days on MN?

Lauren6298 · 09/10/2018 12:45

I think it’s beautiful, as is Alba. Both were on our girls list!

Wherearemycarkeys · 09/10/2018 12:46

Haha shocked to hear it described as 'ridiculous'! It's an old fashioned name which is still very popular in many countries. No more ridiculous than suggesting Mabel, Ivy, Arthur, etc. It's of a similar age and equally sweet sounding.

Happy to hear it's not ready for a comeback, but it's hardly 'out there' 😂

lovely, theres an Alma in my 8 year old niece's class and i think its super cute.

Wherearemycarkeys · 09/10/2018 12:50

Glad to hear some positive responses! I think it's pretty and it has lots of sweet meanings in different languages (it means 'soul' in Spanish which I think is sweet). I love vintage names and this one is a little more unusual which I also like 😊

DD2 had a bestie called Alma. It really worked as a name I like it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 09/10/2018 12:50

I can't stand Ivy and Mabel either Grin
To me it isn't a nice sound and reminds me of Alma of Corrie.

Wherearemycarkeys · 09/10/2018 12:55

Yeah Alma from Corrie is one of my concerns to be honest! Other than that I can't think of any negative connotations though?

To me it's in the same bracket as Brenda, Sheila, Diane and Carol 😳

CaramelAngel · 09/10/2018 13:02

It reminds me of Alma Pudden from the St Clare's books and Le Pont de l'Alma where Princess Di died

Merrz · 09/10/2018 13:03

I really like it, sweet and a bit unusual but normal as well if that makes sense.

PuppyMonkey · 09/10/2018 13:04

Too soon OP, too soon. Alma is still very much a dinner lady name for me.

violeticecream · 09/10/2018 13:05

I think it's lovely.

My dog is called Alba!

Wendygoesfar · 09/10/2018 13:13

I know an Alma, love the name. Much better than all the Emily, Olivia, Sophie names ...

What's ridiculous about Alma? It's beautiful and interesting.

Wherearemycarkeys · 09/10/2018 14:07

Thank you for the opinions! I am really happy that some of you seem to like it! I knew not everyone would but I suppose that's a risk you take with a slightly less common name. I love alba too now you mention it!

This. I do like the name though.

Peachbubble · 09/10/2018 14:09

I quite like it actually

insight483479 · 09/10/2018 14:09

Alba is Scottish Gaelic for Scotland. Not sure I'd use that one.

Aprilislonggone · 09/10/2018 14:10

Alma was my favourite aunt! Died tragically far too young (40's)in the 80's.
Def due a comeback!

hungryhippie · 09/10/2018 14:11

I think its sweet. Sounds very European

Babbaganoush · 09/10/2018 14:12

hana21 · 09/10/2018 14:12
