Only just found out we are expecting DC2 so this may be the first of many threads asking for name advice! Our shortlist so far is:

Wilfred (although less sure about this now after another post where I asked about this name)
Oskar (family connection makes me want to spell it with a 'K')
Barnaby
Louis

Theodora
Dorothea
Eliza
Margot
Elizabeth
Sylvie
Genevieve
Pearl
Mabel

These are first thoughts - some I love, some DH loves - thought I'd add them all without saying who likes what so I could show him the unbiased results! (Not that anyone would choose my name's over his just because they're mine, but he'd claim that if mine were more popular! Grin

OP posts:

Wilfred: I don't like it, sorry! I like Freddy on it's own or short for Fredrick though.
Oskar: This is okay.
Barnaby: Love.
Louis: this is okay.

Theodora: I like it if it's shortened to Teddy rather than Thea.
Dorothea: dislike.
Eliza: dislike.
Margot: strongly dislike and don't understand it's popularity.
Elizabeth: bit of a meh name but has nice potential nicknames.
Sylvie: lovely.
Genevieve: I think it's okay depending on what you'd shorten it to!
Pearl: not keen, sorry.
Mabel: lovely.

Congratulations!

Love Louis.

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/10/2018 17:31

Wilfred - I like it, mainly because I love Wilf. I had it on my list but DH doesn't like it

Oskar - I used to love it, though spelt Oscar, but when DD was born 2 years ago we met so many at baby groups that it took the shine off it for me

Barnaby - love it, it's a front runner in our shortlist

Louis - not a fan and it's only going to get more popular with the Prince

Theodora - it's nice enough, feels a bit stuffy though I like Thea as a nn

Dorothea - love it. I wanted to for DD's mn but DH didn't like it so we went with Dorothy instead

Eliza - lovely name

Margot - very MN popular, it's nice enough. I've only met one who is about 18 months

Elizabeth - prefer just Eliza
Sylvie - not a fan
Genevieve - lovely name, love the nn Ginny

Pearl - pretty

Mabel - love it but it doesn't go with our surname

figelnarage · 06/10/2018 17:34

Louis and Eliza get my votes.

bridgetreilly · 06/10/2018 17:50

I love Dorothea. That would be top of my list, no question. I also quite like Eliza and Margot from your list.

Sungura · 06/10/2018 18:57

Wilfred Not a bad name. Wilford is an alternative.
Oskar I don't like like this name. Makes me think of Oscar the Grouch. It's just ugly.
BarnabySo Cute! My favourite of your boys names.
Louis Nope. Hate the pronunciation Louie. Like Lewis much better.

Theodora A little too old fashioned for my taste. Also a mouthful.
DorotheaAll right, as it has plenty of nn potential.
Eliza Love this name.
Margot Love this no nonsense name, too. So cute, but tough.
ElizabethAll right. Lots of nn potential.
Sylvie Cute, but a nn for Sylvia.
GenevieveDon't really care for this very popular name.
Pearl Don't like it for reasons I can't explain.
Mabel Adorable and pretty.

daisypond · 06/10/2018 19:01

I like all your boys' names.

I like most of the girls - especially Theodora, Elizabeth, Eliza, Dorothea and Margot.
Sylvie is OK
Genevieve - not keen but it's OK
Pearl - OK, but not keen
Mabel - no.

finallychangedmyusername · 06/10/2018 19:06

From your boys list I like all of them, although prefer Oscar spelt like this.

Not keen on Dorothea, Theodora, Pearl, Genevieve or Margot. Elizabeth, Sylvie and Mabel are ok. Love Eliza.

Observatorycrest · 06/10/2018 19:14

ReginaPhalange89 · 06/10/2018 19:58

Wilfred - sorry I don't like this one, too old man style for me
Oskar - I like it, not sold on the spelling but I do like the name
Barnaby - mmm.... Don't think I like this one either, another old man one
Louis - lovely !

Theodora - not keen
Dorothea not keen
Eliza lovely
Margot - hate hate hate and it's so daddy. Ppl on here seem to love it but I can't bare it lol
Elizabeth - i dislike it purely because of an absolute cow I know called Elizabeth. But I do like the nns associated!
Sylvie - old lady
Genevieve - mmm... Think its come back into fashion but I'm not on board just yet, growing on me though
Pearl - old lady
Mabel - the oldest lady in all the land haha

Sorry, I'm sure I'm probably one of the few who aren't that keen on the old fashioned names that seem to be making a come back ! Louis and Eliza are the two I like most

MollyHuaCha · 06/10/2018 20:10

Theodora - ok
Dorothea - ok
Eliza - lovely

Margot - lovely
Elizabeth - lovely
Sylvie - no
Genevieve - nice
Pearl - no

inabox · 06/10/2018 20:17

I've got an Elizabeth. Love it, has so many nick names. Don't really like your other girls names. What about Matilda or Penelope?

Like all the boys names except Wilf not so much. What about Jasper?

Shadow1234 · 07/10/2018 03:07

Louis and Genevieve for me!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/10/2018 10:19

TatianaLarina · 07/10/2018 20:40

Margot, Louis or Oscar.

Don’t like any of the others.

madeoficecream · 07/10/2018 20:43

Love them all except Elizabeth, which I dont hate but I do think is just a little dull. And Barnaby which I just dont like the sound of for some reason.

I think id go for Mabel or Wilfred if I was forced to pick!! But as I said I think they are mostly all great names

Icklepup · 07/10/2018 21:30

Wilfred or Eliza.. lovely!

chocolatefoxes · 07/10/2018 21:58

Wilfred - love this name, sweet and gentle sounding. Wilf is a nice nickname
Oskar - A bit overused imo and there is a possibility if you go with that spelling people might get it wrong.
Barnaby - Dislike
Louis - Love this name.

Theodora - eh not a huge fan
Dorothea - beautiful name, unusual but not too out there.
Eliza - classic and elegant
Margot - dislike, makes me think of maggots
Elizabeth - don't really like but lots of nickname potential
Sylvie - prefer Sylvia but Sylvie is nice too.
Genevieve - eh it's ok
Pearl - nice
Mabel - really cute

Cattenberg · 07/10/2018 22:17

I like Wilfred. As well as Wilf, NNs could include Will or Fred/Freddy.

I knew a Louis. He pronounced it "Lewis", but people kept assuming it was pronounced "Louie" and I think this annoyed him.

I like Eliza. It does make me think of Eliza Doolittle, but I expect people would soon forget that association and just think of your DD.

I love Sylvie. I think it might be the French version of Sylvia. Unfortunately, I couldn't use either name for family reasons.

purple8pig · 23/11/2018 18:47

I love wilfred, barnaby, Eliza, margot, silvia and Mabel

mummypug · 24/11/2018 11:51
