What do you think of the name Mailie for a girl?

Do you have any other suggestions I may like?

Thanks everyone 😊

Scottish name I think. Google tells me it was Burns’s pet sheep!

Nice, but I think I prefer Mallie

Singlenotsingle · 03/10/2018 15:09

Is that the Daily Mailie?

florascotia2 · 03/10/2018 15:59

So far as I know, it's a version of Mary/Molly.

The Scottish Gaelic for Molly (as a variation of Mary) is usually said to be Maili. www.oxfordreference.com/abstract/10.1093/acref/9780198610601.001.0001/acref-9780198610601-e-7007?rskey=maua9T&result=4696

The poor widow in Chaucer's version of Chanticleer and the Fox (Nun's Priests's Tale) had a pet sheep called Malle. That's usually translated (from Middle English) as 'Molly'.

Singlenotsingle wins Grin

It's not good OP.

Terrible non-name. Why inflict this on your child? Confused

First thing it reminds me of is the french mustard company Maille, even though that is pronounced ‘my’.

Sessy19 · 04/10/2018 07:19

Goodness, there’s asking for an opinion and then there’s absolutely unnecessary nastiness.

If you’re all so uncultured as to not recognise this as a true name, skip along and say you’re not a fan.

It’s a really pretty NAME- yes, folks, you imbeciles, it is a NAME, and french babies across the world are given it! It is certainly a reprieve from the millions of samey Olivias and Amelias

NameChange30 · 04/10/2018 08:13

I’d never heard of it in France or elsewhere but I just checked my French baby name book and it’s listed as Maïly, with alternative spellings Maïli, Maïlie, Maylie and Mayli. It’s not common but not unheard of, it’s top 400 and there are 1500 of them in the whole of France. (My book is a couple of years old though.)

I see that PPs have said it’s also a Scottish name. Personally I would only use it if there were French or Scottish connections in the family.

I’m not a big fan and I did think it sounded made up (sorry) but I don’t think there’s any need to be rude about it.

Ixnayonthehombre · 04/10/2018 08:18

It's absolutely beautiful. One of my favourites. I can't quite believe how ignorant all the replies I've read so far are. Just because a name isn't English doesn't mean it's 'made up' Hmm. I've only ever met one Mailie (but clearly that's one more than the other posters here...).

NameChange30 · 04/10/2018 08:21

PS Other spellings are Maélie (top 200, 3000 of them in France) and Maylie (top 500, 750 of them).

There is also Maëlys which is more popular - top 50 and it gets a whole page in the book.

ree348 · 04/10/2018 09:58

Sorry it's a veto from me.

ree348 · 04/10/2018 09:59

Also a word of advice if you really like a name don't share it with anyone before the baby is born - people have a habit of ruining it!

If you like it then call her that.

GinIsIn · 04/10/2018 10:10

It looks like you can't spell Millie. Sorry.

Botanicbaby · 04/10/2018 16:45

Oof the irony of complaining about unnecessary “nastiness” whilst calling everyone imbeciles at the same time Grin

manicinsomniac · 04/10/2018 17:34

I haven't heard it before but think it's pretty. I like it.

It is a sort of backwards e-mail though, if that bothers you.

JellySlice · 04/10/2018 18:02

Mailie - 'little male'
Mailie - post jokes
Mailie - mustard jokes

No.

mellongoose · 06/10/2018 18:19

What a shame about some of these replies.

I think it's lovely 😊

SemperIdem · 06/10/2018 18:51

It being French doesn’t make it beautiful, nor does it necessarily travel well, the responses here more than slightly suggest it does not.

Lots of names don’t.

anotherbabygirl · 06/10/2018 22:17

I think Maile is the correct way to spelt it and it is a Hawaiian name? Rhymes with Hayley?

RavenWings · 06/10/2018 22:25

It's ok, I think the spelling looks a bit cluttered but I like the Hawaiian version pp suggested. It sounds nice.

I know a Malley (mah-lee), which I think is lovely.

Viviennemary · 06/10/2018 22:27

It's the sort of name that makes me think did anybody really call a child that. It's beyond dire with that weird spelling.
