What do you think of the name Mailie for a girl?

Do you have any other suggestions I may like?

Thanks everyone 😊

Can't you use Hayley? On the basis that it's a real name.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/10/2018 15:46

Have you made it up?
Malin perhaps but not Mailie.

TatianaLarina · 02/10/2018 15:54

Are you anglicising a Chinese type name? Mai Lee

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2018 15:55

Yep. Is it actually a name?

Polkasq · 02/10/2018 16:07

It sound like male-y, meaning like a male. Sometimes used in a derogatory way.

LucyV123 · 02/10/2018 16:16

I know a Mailie but spelt Maelie. She's not a chav for the record 👍

Scatteredthoughtss · 02/10/2018 16:17

It's not chavvy and made up, it's French. It's a bit of an original spelling, but it definitely exists.

Link is in French www.magicmaman.com/prenom/mailie,2006200,1202002.asp

This type of name is very common in French, and the spelling varieties are like in English where you have things like Amalia, Amelia, Emilia...

There's a French name, which is Maëlys, which is very normal (in France) and pretty for a girl, lys means lily. But having two dots is complicated. It's sometimes spelt Maylis. How about Maryse?

midsomermurderess · 02/10/2018 16:17

What about Mailys? It has the advantage of being an existing name, albeit French.

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 02/10/2018 16:17

Did you you send it via email? No! I popped it in the mailybox!

Please don't do that to your child...

MamasGarden · 02/10/2018 16:19

I know a lovely woman named May-Lee and my DC also watch a telly programme called The Dumping Ground. One of the care-workers is called May-Li and she's Chinese.

I do think the spelling Mailie looks quite tatty but May-Lee/Li is a real name and I think it is beautiful.

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2018 16:22

An original spelling?
So a made up one.
Poor kid.

peasinpods12 · 02/10/2018 16:25

I quite like it OP. I don't know if it's an actual name, it may well be just not an english name so I don't know why people are being nasty. It sounds nice but I woudlnt keep it unless it is an actual name and has a nice meaning

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/10/2018 16:58

Nice but chavy if that bothers you.

LemonysSnicket · 02/10/2018 17:04

Spell it May-Li if you want that to be their name

joystir59 · 02/10/2018 17:16

I thought post man too

SemperIdem · 02/10/2018 17:34

Um no.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 02/10/2018 17:36

This has grown on me as the days gone on.

LarryFreakinStylinson · 02/10/2018 17:39

I actually know someone who has a Mayleigh. I think it’s bloody awful 🤷🏼‍♀️

PassportBridgetPants · 03/10/2018 00:14

I quite like it. But if people just heard it rather than seeing it written down, they'd probably spell it May-Lee/Leigh.

AlliKaneErikson · 03/10/2018 01:06

I prefer Mali.

HoratioNightboy · 03/10/2018 14:34

Aww, some not nice replies to this post.

OP, I haven't heard of it as a French name, but it is also an old Scots name, the equivalent of English Molly. There are hundreds of them in the records, but it seemed to drop out of fashion towards the end of the 19th century. There have been a handful of them in Scotland over the last 20 years or so, so it's still in use.

Also popularly spelled Malie and Mallie. The Mallie form is modernly pronounced to rhyme with Sally, so that might be an alternative for you. The Gaelic form is Màili.

MissLadyM · 03/10/2018 14:37

Mustard! 😂🤣😂

loveka · 03/10/2018 14:41

Sounds like Australian slang for postman

PiperPublickOccurrences · 03/10/2018 14:43

Looks like you were aiming for Millie, Maisie or Miley and misspelled it.

WillowintheUK · 03/10/2018 15:04

Not too keen on it. How about Malia?
