I love the name Bridget, and whilst I am not currently TTC I have a baby name list. I mentioned this name to DH and PIL, they all immediately said they didn't like it as all they could think of is Bridget Jones' Diary! Is this really how most people feel about the name?

Not me!

Bridgetwithoutthejones · 29/09/2018 08:58

Another Bridget here! To be honest I’m not a massive fan of my name, I feel like people do associate it with Jones and that’s not a problem as I love the books and films, but it doesn’t sound nice to me. That’s probably because no one really loves their own name. It’s served me well enough in life

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 29/09/2018 08:58

Sorry it's a no from me. It sounds frumpy and harsh, like Edith and Olive. But then I like feminine names so probably best to ignore me!

Itchytights · 29/09/2018 09:00

It makes me think of Jones as in Bridget Jones.

It's okay. There are better names imo

bridgetreilly · 29/09/2018 09:01

no one really loves their own name

That's sad. I love mine (not actually Bridget).

I also really like Edith and quite like Olive, so.

Bridgetwithoutthejones · 29/09/2018 09:03

Really? Bridget who isn’t Bridget I haven’t met many who do. I don’t hate the name but certainly don’t love it

junebirthdaygirl · 29/09/2018 09:44

I wouldn't even think of Bridget Jones. But it was my dms name and though we loved her dearly none of us could find a way of even giving it to her gks as a second name..sorry!!
In lrish its Brid...prounced Breed but we couldn't even manage that. Most of the male gks have my dads name as second name but not a Bridget in sight.

Peachbubble · 29/09/2018 10:14

Don't like it I'm afraid - it's very harsh sounding.

MikeUniformMike · 29/09/2018 13:45

Frumpy.

AnyaMoondial · 29/09/2018 14:06

I really like it.

DramaAlpaca · 29/09/2018 14:07

I like it.

usertenmillion · 29/09/2018 14:08

I like Bridget. The catholic church devaled bridget but she was a celtic goddess.

usertenmillion · 29/09/2018 14:09

Im Irish and it's not automatically Bríd although Im sure that's an often used nick name.

SummaLuvin · 29/09/2018 14:15

Interesting how many of you seem to dislike it. Personally I think it is a beautiful name and not over 'frilly'.

daisypond · 29/09/2018 14:19

I'm not keen. It feels very middle aged/elderly, stolid and frumpy to me - probably just right for a revival, then.

Agustarella · 29/09/2018 14:23

I agree that it sounds frumpy and harsh. I really hate my similar-sounding name for that reason. I really liked the Helen Fielding book though!

Maybe you could use the French version, Brigitte? I don't know if it sounds any nicer but the connotations are different.

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 29/09/2018 14:30

I dont dislike it but dont love it. Dont automatically think of Bridget Jones but perhaps because I think first of the Bridget I know in real life.

ZebraKid71 · 29/09/2018 14:31

I like it, but I do automatically think Jones.

kimball · 29/09/2018 14:31

Google 'dr dre bridgette'. I had a close friend called Bridget and we've lost count of how many times this was sung in her honour. She was very cool, confident and had a good sense of humour about it, but still it did get annoying. It was in the late 90s so probably not relevant now. The name just reminded me of this song.

Josico58 · 29/09/2018 14:51

I really like it, also Briony

woodlande · 29/09/2018 16:16

I automatically think of Bridget Jones. Not my taste but think it would grow on me.

LadyHooHa · 29/09/2018 16:18

I was at school with a Bridget. She was known as Bridgebog. It's not a name I would choose for a DD.

parrotonmyshoulder · 29/09/2018 16:20

I know a few little Bridgets. Mostly shortened to Bridie, which is cute.

Owletterocks · 29/09/2018 16:26

Dd has a little friend called Bridget, I think it’s cute. I like Bernadette as well nn Detta

Marcipex · 29/09/2018 16:50

I think it's dismal. Clunky and harsh.
