Baby Boy name help! - Hector or Alden?

Meebs · 19/09/2018 23:39

DH and I currently have the two above names as our front runners for our baby due in October. I prefer Alden, yet now DH has informed me he never really liked the name in the first place despite having these 2 in our shortlist for a couple of months.

Firstly, is Hector a popular name now and is it a bit faddy? Don't really want DS to have 5 other little Hector's in his class.

Is Alden 'a bit too weird' as DH would say, or should I push for it?

Any other name suggestions similar to Alden that DH might approve of? Little upset now since I thought I'd get my perfect and preferred name out of the two. Sad (pregnancy hormones not helping)

Thanks!

Love Hector. It makes me think of The Monarch of the Glen by Compton McKenzie.

MollyHuaCha · 20/09/2018 16:58

Alden

TinselAngel · 20/09/2018 17:15

How about spelling it Aldern? They people wouldn't think it was Aiden.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 20/09/2018 17:24

I love Hector, a lovely, underused, classic name. (And I can just remember Hector's House but I'm 50!)

Alden? Not for me. I don't like the surnames for first names fad.

TatianaLarina · 20/09/2018 19:11

Hector is great. Alden is meh.

daisypond · 20/09/2018 19:33

I like them both, but I think Hector is really great. It's a very strong classic name. It's a bonus that they don't easily shorten into diminutives. I like Alban that pp suggested too.

LydiaLunch7 · 21/09/2018 00:52

Hector is awesome, I love it! And I don't like Alden at all. So it's an easy choice for me!

moredoll · 21/09/2018 01:21

Alden.
Hector not so much.

Hector is fantastic and I don't think its all that popular as a name However you could always check the ratings. Alden is nice enough just not my sort of name (I do adore Hector though)

DaniC18 · 21/09/2018 10:20

Hector inspector came to mind and I keep reading Alden as Aiden tbh. If I had to choose I would go with Hector but don't really like either of them tbh x

MariaYouveGottaSeeHer · 21/09/2018 10:22

I prefer Hector and don’t know any.

RedDwarves · 21/09/2018 10:25

Alden.

Hector is frankly dire.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 21/09/2018 10:31

Hector is truly, truly dreadful.

Alden much nicer.

Sungura · 21/09/2018 10:44

Alton. That sounds like a better, stronger name. Alternatively Aldwin, or Aldrin.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 21/09/2018 14:25

Alton. Like, Towers??

Meebs · 21/09/2018 15:52

Here's the rest of our list (without the 2 mentioned before) since DH and I can't seem to agree between those 2.

What do people think? Want honest opinions but, try not to be super blunt! Grin

Francis
Cornelius
Clyde
Edgar
Ira
Myron
Nelson
Dorian
Jethro
Roland
Basil
Graham
Lyndon
Earl
Phineas

Thanks! Smile

Every time I see Alden written down I read it as Aiden, which might not be what you want. And sorry, but I really dislike Hector. It makes me think of "silly Hector" out of Hector's House, and then of the dead Trojan bloke getting dragged around the city walls behind Achilles' chariot.

starkid · 21/09/2018 15:58

I like Edgar, Basil and Lyndon from your larger list :)

RadagastTheBrown · 21/09/2018 16:02

Hector is great as a Trojan hero, not so good as a name.

Alden, not for me, sorry.

How about Aldous (like Aldous Huxley) but then you're only 1 stop from Albus......

RadagastTheBrown · 21/09/2018 16:03

Just seen your bigger list, are you both Victorian?!?

Meebs · 21/09/2018 16:13

We like old names, what can I say!? Grin

Fair play Grin

MariaYouveGottaSeeHer · 21/09/2018 16:31

I only like Francis from the bigger list. I do really like it though.

Justanothermile · 21/09/2018 16:36

This is my Hector. He's the bestSmile
