Baby Boy name help! - Hector or Alden?

Meebs · 19/09/2018 23:39

DH and I currently have the two above names as our front runners for our baby due in October. I prefer Alden, yet now DH has informed me he never really liked the name in the first place despite having these 2 in our shortlist for a couple of months.

Firstly, is Hector a popular name now and is it a bit faddy? Don't really want DS to have 5 other little Hector's in his class.

Is Alden 'a bit too weird' as DH would say, or should I push for it?

Any other name suggestions similar to Alden that DH might approve of? Little upset now since I thought I'd get my perfect and preferred name out of the two. Sad (pregnancy hormones not helping)

Thanks!

Always liked Hector but my mum said I couldn't use it because of Hector's House. No Youtube when DS was born (2001) so I had to take it on trust that this was some kind of horrible/ridiculous association as opposed to an innocuous kids' programme that few people remember. I still think it's a pretty good name, whereas Alden isn't even a first name at all. I predict that the surname-as-first-name trend will be make everyone cringe in a few years, like Kevin and Darren and Tracy make people cringe now.

I think Alden is the best option.

Your other list is, well, eccentric.

I think with these kind of names you have to think, would I be happy to say 'hi, I'm Myron/Ronald/Cornelius.

If you guys are, say, Susan and Steve, it seems a bit unfair to saddle a tiny cute person with one of these types of names.

Sunflower321 · 21/09/2018 18:05

I love the name Cornelius and know a fab one! What's unfair about it?!

I'd rather not be called Steve or Sue though Smile

crunchtime · 21/09/2018 18:13

all absolutely dreadful.
How on earth could you look at a beautiful new born baby and think'we''ll call him Myron?' Shock

BithieBunny · 21/09/2018 18:16

@dovek123, I made an account just to say that I love Cecil. I have a 3 year old named Cecil. I have received a lot of negative comments about it though.

BithieBunny · 21/09/2018 18:19

OP, I prefer the name Alden. I don't think it's awful.

Justanothermile · 21/09/2018 18:22

My DC, who are now 19/17 both had unusual names given to them. I remember being laughed at once or twice for DS. It's now pretty much the most mundane and popular name, I wish I could divulge what it was. I'm a bit disappointed actually.

Arriettyborrower · 21/09/2018 18:26

Jethro or Lyndon from your long list.

I know an adult Jethro, he is fabulous and the name really suits him. Lyndon is a good strong name that would suit any boy.

I do really like Alden too, and Hector, I’m no help!

dovek123 · 21/09/2018 19:39

Thanks I like Cecil but OH not keen ! Men !

Itchytights · 21/09/2018 19:40

Honestly?

None of them.

Itchytights · 21/09/2018 19:43

At a push from your list I’d say Francis but tbh I don’t like any of them.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 21/09/2018 20:25

It's unfair because parents who have relatively bog standard names are setting their children up for a lifetime of piss taking, CVs going in the bin and double takes when they say their name. I mean, what do you think will happen when you name your child Cecil, a name which is almost universally disparaged? If you wouldn't use it yourself don't saddle a beautiful newborn baby with it.

lottiegarbanzo · 21/09/2018 20:48

Well, that's quite a list!

Francis - nice
Cornelius - Dutch, interesting, can be shortened to Con, which I like.
Clyde - Hmm, 'Bonnie and...' River... Clydesdale horse.
Edgar - yes, pretty good.
Ira - An homage to Gershwin? Bit like Arlo I suppose.
Myron - Hmm. No. 'My Ron', similarity to Myra. No.
Nelson - Ok.
Dorian - like it but would take a bit of personality to carry off.
Jethro - Farm labourer.
Roland - Kid from Grange Hill.
Basil - Fawlty. Baz is awful.
Graham - retro but not yet fashionable. Was always pretty awful, epitomises mediocrity.

Lyndon - Dunno.
Earl - Ridiculous.
Phineas - Well, not bad actually. Phin is nice. I think of Gage - good story.

Disparaged ?! Cecil is a lovely name

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 21/09/2018 21:03

Yes, people do say that on MN but in RL everyone would be going 'oh my god did you hear what they named him!?'

As much as nobody likes to admit that.

lottiegarbanzo · 21/09/2018 21:05

Cecily is lovely.

Sunflower321 · 21/09/2018 21:10

but in RL everyone would be going 'oh my god did you hear what they named him!?'

No, not everyone. Only narrow minded people like you appear to be.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 21/09/2018 21:14

Or honest. A lot of people on here claim to be utterly horrified at the concept that we all judge each other, but there's nobody alive who doesn't judge.

lottiegarbanzo · 21/09/2018 21:14

How about:

Clarence
Corin
Seth

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 22/09/2018 02:16

DP and I have a friend called Roland and I love that name. He's in his 30s but is known as Rolo to the close group of friends. I think it's charming.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 22/09/2018 11:30

I once knew a Ranald. He was hot 😍

Meebs · 22/09/2018 14:44

DH and I have reached a compromise and made a decision, thanks for all your thoughts! Smile
