Genevieve?

I'm loving the name Genevieve and Evie as a nickname. However, OH isn't convinced as he thinks it looks bizarre written down and the meaning is tribal woman which isn't great (This doesn't bother me as my name meaning isn't great either)
What's everyone's thoughts?

I love it!

Synecdoche · 11/09/2018 11:20

I love it too

Sophronia · 11/09/2018 11:22

Behindthename which is usually quite accurate says it means “kin, family” + “wife, woman”.

I think it’s a lovely name. I like Vivi as a nn.

justilou1 · 11/09/2018 11:25

I adore it. One of my best friends has a daughter called Genevieve, and she is one of the most charismatic kids you are ever likely to come across (in a truly delightful, non-nauseating way.) and another has an Evie, who is chilled and loving and all my associations with both those names are totally positive. You win!!!

EleanorRigbey · 11/09/2018 11:25

Beautiful name.

DC06 · 11/09/2018 11:27

So pleased at the positive responses I'm getting. Thank you all so much! Do you think the spelling would constantly be an issue? That's OH worry x

Really beautiful feminine and elegant.
But don’t like understand the dislike of tribal woman?

DC06 · 11/09/2018 11:40

Ohyesiam
OH likes names that have meanings like 'wisdom' 'gift' etc so I think the meaning isnt special enough to him. He loves Sophia as it means wisdom but I think it's a bit plain and common x

I loved it at one point, completely vetoed by DH as "we aren't French", but got a lovely name for DD anyway.

WhereIsMyDressingGown · 11/09/2018 13:09

It’s quite clunky and ugly IMO. And I much prefer Gigi to Evie. Genevieve is not very popular and by calling her Evie, you’re taking away from the uniqueness of Genevieve.

chipshape · 11/09/2018 13:46

I think it's gorgeous but the Genevieve I know is nicknamed 'gen' (Jen) so that might end up being the default.

LeeMiller · 11/09/2018 14:00

Genevieve is really pretty (I also like Guinevere and Ginevra).

The only one I've ever met is known as Gen/Jen. I agree calling her Evie would detract from the specialness of Genevieve, so I'd use Vivi/Viva as a nickname.

Quangot · 11/09/2018 14:48

I don't particularly like it TBH. Love Sophia though.

starkid · 11/09/2018 14:57

I think it's gorgeous :)

Sungura · 11/09/2018 15:12

To your question,: No, the spelling will not be an issue. People learn how to spell it, no real problem. I have known two Genevieves, elderly ladies. One was called Gen. The other simply had no nn at all.If your OH doesn't like it, though, that is what counts, not what we think. Find a name you both can agree on and you'll be happier.

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 11/09/2018 15:20

Love Genevieve. I know 2- one is English and in her late 20s and goes by Genny, the other is an elderly French lady who uses the whole name. I don’t like Evie though, it doesn’t come that naturally from Genevieve for me and I think it’s really boring as there are so many small Evie/Eve/Eva/Ava’s. It’s a waste of a beautiful name to abbreviate it to Evie in my opinion.

mrsm43s · 11/09/2018 15:26

Love Genevieve, but wouldn't choose the nickname Evie. It's not an unpleasant shortening, but it's so very, very popular now. She's likely be one of several Evies in her class - with a few other Aoife/Eva/Ava's etc thrown in for good measure.

Call her Genevieve, but give her one the much nicer other nicknames - Genny/Gen/Ginny/Vivi/Viv etc

dramaattheschoolgate · 11/09/2018 17:48

Don't worry about spelling, honestly I have a normal name, as does ds, but people manage to spell both wrong all the time

AuntieUrsula · 11/09/2018 19:09

Head girl at DD's school is called Genevieve, nn Evie

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 11/09/2018 19:10

I know a Genevieve, known as Vivi. It’s a lovely name either way and I wish it had crossed our minds before dd was born.

IamPickleRick · 11/09/2018 19:13

There was a film about a car called Genevieve. That’s the association I’d make. I can’t temember if the car was sentient, like Herbie...

Anyway it’s nice but too many syllables for me.

Mrslifecrisis · 12/09/2018 15:04

I think it’s lovely and it was on our shortlist for girls’ names when I was pregnant with DS2. It’s uncommon without being too ‘out there’ and there are lots of options for nick names - Gen, Geni, Evie, Vivi.

TheWinterofOurDiscountTentsMk2 · 12/09/2018 15:30

It's got 2 quite different pronounciations though, are you going for the English or the French?

FfionFlorist · 12/09/2018 15:45

''Tis my name. Spelling is sometimes tricky so I use the nn Eve when I think somebody really won't remember or work it out. When I was a child I had a little rhyme that helped my friends remember how to spell it.

Go for it,people always say they like my name.

PippilottaLongstocking · 12/09/2018 15:49

I’ve never considered Evie as a shortening of Genevieve, the only ones I’ve ever met have been Jenny/Genie. But it’s lovely!
