Genevieve?

I'm loving the name Genevieve and Evie as a nickname. However, OH isn't convinced as he thinks it looks bizarre written down and the meaning is tribal woman which isn't great (This doesn't bother me as my name meaning isn't great either)
What's everyone's thoughts?

I thought it's a French name, Geneviève, pronounced Je ne viève, No idea how most English people would pronounce that?!

TheWinterofOurDiscountTentsMk2 · 12/09/2018 16:35

In French it would be szhon-vee-ev.

English it would be Jen-eh-veev.

BrendasUmbrella · 12/09/2018 16:37

Je - ne - veeve is how most Brits would pronounce it, I think?

I don't see the point in getting tangled up in how French people would pronounce it. Many of our standard names came from other countries and languages.

It's all just a bunch of made up words at the end of the day, so when naming your children you may as well pick the made up word you like the best!

TrashPanda · 12/09/2018 16:41

I love it, I know two. One is nearly 30 and goes by Genna, the other is 4 and known as Jelly. I don't think I'd use Evie as a nn as it takes away the uniqueness of the name and turns it into a very popular name.

I do really love the French pronunciation but that might be taking it too far if you're in the UK with no French history.

Mamabear4180 · 16/09/2018 15:11

It's my name and I go by Jenny and always have. It has a couple of meanings, not really tribal woman but woman/maiden and also white water.

I named one of my daughter's Eve after me despite never being called Eve myself, it's a totally acceptable nickname. However Eve/Evie won't be associated with Genevieve unless you tell people whereas Jenny is usually a nickname.

I hated my name as a child because it was so uncommon, I don't mind it now but rarely use it but I've always been complimented on it whenever anyone has found out. I think that's the way with unusual names-people will compliment them because they're surprised! What they really think is anyones guess!

I actually prefer Guinevere as it sounds more romantic to me. I was often confused for Guinevere!

TillyTheTiger · 16/09/2018 15:18

I love it, I've been trying to talk DH into adding it to our list. The only Genevieve I know goes by the nickname Viva.

daisypond · 16/09/2018 15:25

It's nice, but don't shorten it to Evie. There are much nicer and less common shortenings.

TheGateauIsInTheChateau · 16/09/2018 15:27

It’s beautiful but there’s also Ginevra which is similar (just means Juniper) if your H isn’t keen on how Genevieve looks written down...

summerlovingliz · 16/09/2018 15:28

V classy Smile

LeonoraFlorence · 16/09/2018 15:33

My DD2 has a friend with this name and is known as Vivi. Lovely

Sungura · 16/09/2018 15:34

Yes, Genevieve means white wave. 🌊 I have never known of the other meaning until your post.

Gigis · 16/09/2018 15:42

I've posted before about this but I have a Genevieve, nn Evie in public but family calls her Gigi. I ignore people who wrinkle their noses at Evie because it's soooo common dahling...it's common for a reason- it's a gorgeous nickname! And having the grown up name Genevieve it stems from gives her the option as she grows up into a young woman to ditch Evie if she wants and use a very feminine, classy and unusual name instead.

GrumpyOlderBloke · 16/09/2018 15:44

A delightful dignified name.

Do not under any circumstances tolerate it being 'shortened'.

It would always remind me of John Gregson's Darracq, which would be an added bonus. But I'm a coffin dodging petrol head, so ignore me.

Sunflower321 · 16/09/2018 15:45

I like Geneviève, especially pronounced the French way. Beautiful and elegant.

I agree that Evie has become dull through overuse. I'd not shorten to that.

foxycleopauper · 16/09/2018 15:45

Lovely! Much nicer than Sophia.

SlimmingMumOf1 · 16/09/2018 15:46

How do you pronounce it?

Pebblesandfriends · 16/09/2018 15:47

Gorgeous. This was one of ours for ds ( before we knew he was a boy!)

Sunflower321 · 16/09/2018 15:47

I can't even hear the name Evie in Geneviève when I say it.

Sunflower321 · 16/09/2018 15:47

Je ne vee ev (emphasis on ev)

LeeMiller · 16/09/2018 16:06

The British ones I've come across pronounce it Jen - uh - veev

Mamabear4180 · 16/09/2018 19:55

Jen-uh-veeve in English. My family called me vieve/Vieve-ee which I also hated lol.

To the poster saying refuse for it to be shortened..it will be regardless, probably by Genevieve herself lol!
