Is this name too weird?

So for a girl I love the name Hecate, (Hec-a-tee), its the name of a Greek goddess associated with magic and space. I think it is both a cool and pretty name! I know a lot of people probably wont be keen and she'll have it pronounced wrong her whole life...should I still use the name???

I'd go with too weird. Too closely related to Macbeth's weird sisters, as well.

Mishappening · 09/09/2018 17:40

Hmm? I would not want to give a child a name that would constantly cause confusion.

Synecdoche · 09/09/2018 17:40

Not too sure about Hecate, probably because of the witchy connotations.

Antigone, however, I love, so 🤷‍♀️

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 09/09/2018 17:41

I love it!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/09/2018 17:41

Weird,

I’ve never heard of it.

If I had to say it I’d say Hec Tate

sexnotgender · 09/09/2018 17:41

I don’t hate it but what a massive ball ache to spend your WHOLE life spellings your name out and correcting the pronunciation.

I simply wouldn’t inflict that on a child.

pups4000 · 09/09/2018 17:43

My name is similar, in the fact that people can never pronounce or spell it, it is sometimes annoying but I do love explaining where the name comes from and what it means.

AnnieAnoniMoose · 09/09/2018 17:44

There’s a poster who used to use that name, I think she’s still here but namechanged

I’ve been saying it wrong (in my head) for over a decade now. I didn’t realise it was the name of a Greek goddess.

It will get shortened to Heck and for that alone I’d pass on it.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 09/09/2018 17:45

I don't like the mystic connotations but I think it is a very pretty name. In my head I have always mispronounced it but I really like it.

Raines100 · 09/09/2018 17:46

Witch!

LeeMiller · 09/09/2018 17:46

My first thought was also Macbeth and witches (in a creepy old crone not cool magic way). Personally I find the 'Hec' sound rather harsh, like in Hector and Hester.

pups4000 · 09/09/2018 17:46

I did think of that, but I wouldn't mind the nickname Tee for her which is easily associated to the name

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 09/09/2018 17:46

Well, my first thought is that Hecate is the ruler of the witches in Shakespeare's Macbeth which to me isn't a particularly good association.

Secondly I'd instinctively pronounce it as it is in the play, which is something like HECK-ut, rather than your Greek pronunciation - which I do think is nicer.

I have to say I'm not a fan of the name.

babbscrabbs · 09/09/2018 17:51

Where do you live and what's the accent like and where will she go to school? Will they drop the T? Around here it would become hecar'ee. Not good.

I couldn't hack a life of having to correct people calling me heh-kate or hee-kate either. Which is a shame because it's not a bad name in theory.

You might love explaining your name but the next person might bloody hate it.

How about Asteria or Thalia?

IHeartKingThistle · 09/09/2018 17:53

Oh honey, she's QUEEN of the fucking witches. And Macbeth is still firmly on the syllabus. You just can't.

What about Hebe?

pups4000 · 09/09/2018 17:57

My sisters name means witch and it has never once been used against her. I know it may seem mean but I love the mystery that surrounds the name

Hecate is one of the possible origins of the name Katherine (origins Greek, but unknown).

If you like Hecate (bit too weird), I'd go for Katerina or Ekaterina. Only you will know the witchy connection!

AtticaRose · 09/09/2018 18:13

I think there might even be a variant Hekaterina out there! Can't recall.

RandomMess · 09/09/2018 18:15

I love it but probably due to the long term poster here 🤣

Pieceofpurplesky · 09/09/2018 18:17

Hectate is the witch of necromancy ... bit weird for a baby

IHeartKingThistle · 09/09/2018 18:23

Does your sister's name obviously mean witch? Your baby is literally going to sit in s classroom reading a play in which it says 'Enter Hecate, queen of the witches.' Would you have enjoyed that at 14?

AndInShortIWasAfraid · 09/09/2018 18:23

Could you use it as a middle name? The witchy connotation isn't great. What about Hero or Hebe?

schooltripwoes · 09/09/2018 18:24

Too odd. Will probably be mispronounced has Heh-Kate

strawberrypenguin · 09/09/2018 18:25

I like but wouldn't have pronounced it correctly if you hadn't said

DoubleHelix79 · 09/09/2018 18:49

I've spent my life spelling out my name and while it's been a minor annoyance I have grown to like the fact that it is somewhat unusual. It's nice knowing that you're not one of five people in your class / office with the same name.
