Is this name too weird?

So for a girl I love the name Hecate, (Hec-a-tee), its the name of a Greek goddess associated with magic and space. I think it is both a cool and pretty name! I know a lot of people probably wont be keen and she'll have it pronounced wrong her whole life...should I still use the name???

I'm not sure if the name is too "weird". Or let's just say that weirdness isn't why I personally wouldn't choose the name.

The name has strong witchy connotations. Which means that it has for quite a few people associations of scariness and or evil. I personally wouldn't use the name unless there was a strong sentimental / personal reasons.

daisypond · 09/09/2018 19:03

I think Macbeth too. It has quite an evil connotation, which I wouldn't like to be saddled with.

ismellsnow · 09/09/2018 19:06

More low brow than Shakespeare, I can only hear that name in the voice of Willow from Buffy, chanting to Goddess Hecate, followed by some spell or other Grin

mimibunz · 09/09/2018 19:09

Nickname ‘Heckles?’

AdaColeman · 09/09/2018 19:17

Not as pretty a name as Astarte.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 09/09/2018 19:22

I like it. It's different but not in a chavvy way. If stick with it

kenandbarbie · 09/09/2018 19:24

It's too unusual and hard to pronounce I think. Also doesn't have a pleasant sound to it.

Icklepup · 09/09/2018 19:25

Too weird

BigBlueBubble · 09/09/2018 19:31

I’d pronounce it the Shakespearean way, which is not how you want it pronounced. Also it will get shortened to Hec (awful) or Cate (unexciting).

pumpkinyael · 09/09/2018 19:36

@BigBlueBubble

Heckie would be a nice nn. I know someone nicknamed Heckie, it really suits him :)

Hadehahaha · 09/09/2018 19:39

Too weird in my opinion. I would find it spooky. Macbeth connection!

stickygotstuck · 09/09/2018 19:40

Beautiful name, not so great connotations. Same reason we decided to pass on Lilith for out DD.

I wouldn't OP. There are loads more positive, equally beautiful Greek mythology names to choose from.

RolaColaLola · 09/09/2018 19:47

I don't like the name. It sounds harsh and there're too many opportunities to mispronounce/abbreviate/negative associations.

Lucy1103 · 09/09/2018 20:02

My first thought was ‘pale Hecate’s offerings’

sobloodyitchy · 09/09/2018 20:12

I'd never heard it before but LOVE it. And think any kind of witchy connotation is cool.

Lovely name, yes people may call her hec-Tate but you get issues with all kinds of names and spellings

IsadoraQuagmire · 09/09/2018 20:16

I've always liked it. I'm really surprised at people saying they didn't know how to pronounce it too, I thought it was a name everyone would be familiar with.

MaryandMichael · 09/09/2018 20:20

I like 'Hecate' but people (who are, in the main, ignorant) will pronounce it 'He-Kate'.

MaryandMichael · 09/09/2018 20:20

Antigone is lovely, too. 'Aunty-gone'. Er, no.

butlerswharf · 09/09/2018 20:25

Totally your choice. I think lots of ppl will mispronounce it. I read it as Heck-ate.

pumpkinyael · 09/09/2018 20:43

Antigone is worse than Hecate imo. Hecate is at least the name of a goddess...

BikeRunSki · 09/09/2018 20:48

Far too witchy, and Macbeth is widely studied!
Also, too much of PITA to spell out all the flaming time. I speak as someone who has to spell out or explain my name about once a day - still!

HairyToity · 09/09/2018 21:22

I love the name. We used our unusual as a middle name. Didn't have the guts to use as a first name. I imagined it was a name my daughter might tell me off for choosing when she was older, and tell me she'd rather a normal popular name like Olivia, Jessica or Amelia.

Treasure114 · 09/09/2018 21:22

Far too weird!!!

Picknickers · 09/09/2018 22:38

I think it sounds a bit hiccupy. As someone unmercifully teased over a line in Othello (can't say which. Far too outing) for over a year, please please don't inflict that on your daughter.

moredoll · 09/09/2018 22:59

Nope
