Pronouncing Aaron

I’m in the UK, in the suburban South, for reference.

How would you pronounce Aaron? Is it AH-run, or AIR-run?

I’m not bias in either direction, just interested to know. I like the name.

Bertrand with my Scottish accent Aaron (ah-run) does sound different to the island Arran (Arrrrr - an) I'm over emphasising the rolling r's there but rhotic accents do make a difference.

Yes, I agree with this. Irish here!

NorthEndGal · 05/09/2018 18:40

Married to an Aaron, we say it Air-in
Canadian both of us.

MinaPaws · 05/09/2018 18:43

Air-run in SE England. I know a few. Nice name.

oreolovegood · 05/09/2018 18:44

SE london here, would definitely say ah-run as would everyone I know

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 06/09/2018 11:33

it's not regional, it's about two different names.
The correct pron of Aaron is Air-un
Arran is a different name.
However in the last few years, people have got confused and mixed up the two.
I knew an Aaron Aaronson in North London, guess what religion his mum was and how he said the name? Yes the correct way.

BevBrook · 06/09/2018 12:06

Out of interest, how do Air-un pronouncers of Aaron say Erin, which I would say as Air-un?

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 06/09/2018 12:13

E-rin is E-rin…

Air-un is Air-un

They do sound similar though..(sitting here muttering to myself)

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2018 12:15

Erin is pronounced as spelled. Eh-rin .
So is Aaron. Air- Ron.
So is Arran. Arr-an.

MadisonAvenue · 06/09/2018 12:22

Aran.

TeacupDrama · 06/09/2018 12:29

I think Aaron is a hebrew name pronounced Airun, so if referring to Moses's brother it is definitely Air-on but otherwise I think it depends on preference, I think the Scottish Ahrun ( Aaron ) is a derivative of the isle of Arran like other Scottish islands that have become common names Lewis Harris Isla Iona Skye etc

RavenWings · 06/09/2018 12:56

I'm laughing at the people insisting that there's only one pronunciation. Esme, Helena, Niamh, Alicia...many names have multiple pronunciations.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/09/2018 16:38

I know an Aaron here in Australia who pronounces it Arrun, or Azz (love the Aussies!) I've got the hang of it now - I kept trying to pronounce it the way I'm used to (Air-un) but I'm there now.

Holidayshopping · 06/09/2018 16:50

The correct pron of Aaron is Air-un

sobloodyitchy · 06/09/2018 16:51

I have an Aaron and it's Air-on. A biblical name. we're in the SE

Pepper123123 · 06/09/2018 17:03

My brother is Aaron.

We pronounce is Ahh-Ron

S.wales.

bridgetreilly · 06/09/2018 17:20

Air-ron does not sound like Erin. At all. The 'air' is a long sound, like the word air. Erin starts with a short sound like the word error. Plus, of course, they have different vowels in the second syllable. I really don't think anyone would get them confused.

treaclesoda · 06/09/2018 17:26

Air and error have the same sound in my accent.

bridgetreilly · 06/09/2018 17:32

The same length, too? Air sounds much longer than err(or) to me.

treaclesoda · 06/09/2018 17:35

Yes, they just sound identical to me. Smile

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2018 17:36

I would like to hear from some Jewish Mumsnetters on this thread-surely you don't talk about the Prophet Arran?

The question is, does it really matter? Many many foreign names are used in the UK, and most are pronounced differently to how they are in their language of origin.

Sessy19 · 07/09/2018 08:13

So boringly typical of the yups on mumsnet to announce that they are right!!

Its already been established that there are several pronounciations.

It’s OK to give an opinion without trying to force everyone to your particular way of thinking. It’s offputting!

Yups?

Deliphant · 07/09/2018 08:57

I would pronounce it Ah-run and i'm in the SE. I've known an Arran and an Aaron and pronounced them both the same.

MusicLOUD · 07/09/2018 11:00

SE, Ah-Run. Never heard of the air-on pn.

I went to school with few, only ever Ah-Run. I thought Air-On was a mn thing because I've only seen it on here.
