Pronouncing Aaron

I’m in the UK, in the suburban South, for reference.

How would you pronounce Aaron? Is it AH-run, or AIR-run?

I’m not bias in either direction, just interested to know. I like the name.

Ah-run. I’m in Devon.

AnnieOH1 · 02/09/2018 20:03

I had a friend at school in South Yorkshire who was Aaron - air-ron. But usually if I'm speaking of the Bible figure I'd say A-ron. Strange never thought about it before!

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2018 20:04

Air-ron is right.

If you want a different pronunciation, use a different spelling.

daisypond · 02/09/2018 20:11

Air-ron. I've always assumed the Ah-ron pronunciation is American/Australian.

LouLouLoupee · 02/09/2018 20:17

I have an Aaron.
Caused a bit of a debate when we were deciding on a name, I’d have pronounced it Air-on (west of Scotland) DH pronounced it Ah-ron (Irish) we were living in Edinburgh at the time and the general consensus was Ah-Ron so I was happy enough to go with that.
Now we live in the west and most people who see it written down usually say Air-on until corrected. To complicate matters further, we live very close to the island of Arran 😂
I do love the name though and difference in pronunciation is a really insignificant part of our lives

Ontopofthesunset · 02/09/2018 20:21

It was always pronounced as Air-un (like the spelling) as a Biblical name and in my childhood (early 50s now) I never heard any other pronunciation unless it was the South Asian name Arun. However, the Arr-un pronunciation seems to be more common now. I don't know if it is a US pronunciation that has moved over here or just an adoption by analogy with other names like Darren, Karen, Sharon etc.

LemonysSnicket · 02/09/2018 21:16

Ah-run north east and have a friend called Aaron in London (where I live) and everyone calls him Ah-run

DramaAlpaca · 02/09/2018 21:41

Until I was told otherwise, I'd pronounce Aaron as Air-un.

There were two Aarons in my DS's class at school, one pronounced Air-un, the other pronounced Arrun. To add to the confusion, there was an Arran as well.

spottybetty · 02/09/2018 21:44

Ahren to rhyme with Karen

spottybetty · 02/09/2018 21:44

But I have an Arran not an Aaron!

Sessy19 · 02/09/2018 21:46

Apparently the AH-run pronounciation can be attributed to Elvis Presley....who was christened Elvis Aron, but changed the spelling to Aaron by deed poll and still pronounced it the ‘Aron’ way.

Aaron originated from Aharon (Hebrew), but the Greeks dropped the ‘h’. So it’s not a british name. It’s used across Europe, and as many countries use one pronunciation as the other. So no one is right or wrong. Sorry mumsnet mafia!! 😂

Im danish, and the Danes would pronounce the Aa like arrow. But I live where it might also be pronounced as air....

Only ever heard it pronounced Ah-run (I'm in the SW of England).

OhJean · 03/09/2018 15:30

Another for A-A-Ron.

matchalatte · 03/09/2018 15:33

Aaron is AIR-RUN and Arron is AH-RUN here in Scotland. I know people of both names and that is how they pronounce them.

BevBrook · 03/09/2018 15:36

I am in the SE and would say it to rhyme with Darren, Karen and Sharon.
If someone said Air-un I would think they meant Erin.

popsocks · 03/09/2018 15:44

Aaron pronounced the same way as Karen, Sharon, Baron. From the westcountry here.

Tubbyinthehottub · 03/09/2018 15:47

I never know how to pronounce this name.

bridgetreilly · 03/09/2018 19:17

Airrun.

If you want Arran, call him Arran.

Dontrocktheboat · 03/09/2018 19:28

Definitely Air-on

My ds is Aaron, pronounced the correct biblical way, and people pronouncing it Arran drives me nuts, as it sounds nowhere near as nice. Unfortunately, I think this has become a common way of (mis) pronouncing the name in recent years. I would also quote the joke about Moses being bald (sometimes seen with Aaron and sometimes not!) as proof of correct pronounciation! Also, for those who ever watched Only Fools and Horses:
You can't call him Aaron, he'll get called g string - Aaron the g string.
(Clearly I have spent too much time amassing evidence...)
If you want Arran, spell it Arran, like the island!

WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul · 03/09/2018 19:31

I'm from SE England. Would pronounce it AH-run. Never heard anyone from my area say air-run.

Glumglowworm · 03/09/2018 19:46

I’ve known one Air-un and several Ah-run

(In NW England and SE Wales)

Scabetty · 03/09/2018 19:52

I would say Air-on. Went to school witj one. I prefer Arrun.

RavenWings · 03/09/2018 20:00

Ah-ron/Ah-run is nice. Never heard of the air-ron pronunciation in Ireland, don't like it at all. That would equal Erin to me as said above.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 03/09/2018 20:07

Air-run. I’m from London and have only become aware of people pronouncing it Arron in the past few years. To me, Arran is a different name.

Quangot · 03/09/2018 21:00

Air-on.
