Pronouncing Aaron

I’m in the UK, in the suburban South, for reference.

How would you pronounce Aaron? Is it AH-run, or AIR-run?

I’m not bias in either direction, just interested to know. I like the name.

Went to school with one and he was air-on. He used to get fucked off if people pronounced it Arron and said his name would be spelt with two R’s if it was Arron. Inclined to agree.

chuckiecheese · 04/09/2018 16:03

Ar run

SE ENGLAND

treaclesoda · 04/09/2018 16:04

I've only ever heard it pronounced as Ar-ron.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 04/09/2018 16:05

Lived in outer London for 20 years and knew a few Aarons .. without exception it was prounonced to rhyme with Sharon

goose1964 · 04/09/2018 16:07

Akron to me as it's a double a . I have a relative pronounced ah Ron and his mum had to tell us all how she wanted it pronounced

goose1964 · 04/09/2018 16:07

Airon bloody auto correct

SemperIdem · 04/09/2018 17:51

I’ve only known Aaron’s pronounced Ah-run in South Wales.

eltsihT · 04/09/2018 17:57

I am a high school teacher in Scotland I teach 4 Aaron’s I just ask them which pronounicarion they use when I first meet them. Currently I have 2 of each.

midsomermurderess · 04/09/2018 18:18

I used to think it has a long A but where I live, Scotland, it seems to be a short one. I once confused someone by asking if she had name her Aaron (with the Ah run pr.) after the Scottish Island.

Sunflower321 · 04/09/2018 18:56

Aah-ron

CaptainCallisto · 04/09/2018 19:08

I've heard it both ways.

The boy who had the name at my school was the son of a Rabi (also grandson) and they pronounced it Ah-ron. I tend to think that, it being a Hebrew name, that's probably the 'correct' pronunciation...

There've been so many people using each of the three (also heard are-ron) pronunciations for so long now I think they've all become equally valid! It's like Evelyn/Mia - you just check which pronunciation the individual prefers.

strawberrypenguin · 04/09/2018 19:11

Ah-run for me. SE England

Joinourclub · 04/09/2018 19:14

without exception, they have pronounced their name Arron to rhyme with Karen

The problem is that Karen has more than one pronunciation!

BumDisease · 04/09/2018 20:09

It does?

Joinourclub · 04/09/2018 20:50

Yes, two versions to rhyme with the two versions of Aaron!

BumDisease · 04/09/2018 20:57

Kay-ren?! Wtf...?

SoupDragon · 04/09/2018 20:59

Care-ren like Air-un

Sunflower321 · 04/09/2018 21:07

But it's spelt Aa-ron and not Er-on

mammmamia · 04/09/2018 21:10

Joinourclub · 04/09/2018 21:11

Kah- ren
Kair- ren

BumDisease · 04/09/2018 21:52

Mind = blown

adviceonthepox · 05/09/2018 01:13

Air on for two I know and ah-Ron for the other 3 I know. I read it as ah-Ron

Holidayshopping · 05/09/2018 09:51

Definitely Air-on

It’s not definitely anything, as this thread has proved. The original Hebrew version had an h in it!

LemonysSnicket · 05/09/2018 09:53

@Joinourclub I think my Aunt Karen would staunchly disagree. Nobody pronounces Karen care-on.

Sakura7 · 05/09/2018 10:25

Ah-ron is the default I think. Have only ever known one pronounced as air-on and thought is sounded odd. This is in Ireland.
