Pronouncing Aaron

Sessy19 · 02/09/2018 18:52

I’m in the UK, in the suburban South, for reference.

How would you pronounce Aaron? Is it AH-run, or AIR-run?

I’m not bias in either direction, just interested to know. I like the name.

Why not spell it Airon if you prefer that pronunciation?

I'd say Aah-ron if I see Aaron.

dancingunicorns123 · 05/09/2018 10:54

Ah-Ron in midlands

twoundertwo54321 · 05/09/2018 10:55

Air run. West Midlands

mammmamia · 05/09/2018 11:00

Literally never heard of anyone pronouncing Karen Care-on

SoupDragon · 05/09/2018 11:14

I have.

SoupDragon · 05/09/2018 11:14

Well, more of a care-ren I guess.

SoupDragon · 05/09/2018 11:15

Why not spell it Airon if you prefer that pronunciation?

Because that’s not how it is spelt.

RubyPreciousJewel · 05/09/2018 11:22

Ah-run. To me Air-un is the female name Erin.

PhillyJoe · 05/09/2018 11:36

Glad someone brought up the Karen thing. I say Air-En, Kair-en and Shair-en as default. I am from elsewhere though.

BertrandRussell · 05/09/2018 12:54

Aaron is a Hebrew name, surely? Certainly the prophet is pronounced Air-ron. If you want Arran why not spell it Arran?

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 05/09/2018 13:52

I know several Aarons here in Scotland who are all ah-ron (just to combat the PP who claimed it was the other way in Scotland! It's a big place!).

The only air-on I know is American.

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 05/09/2018 13:55

Bertrand with my Scottish accent Aaron (ah-run) does sound different to the island Arran (Arrrrr - an) I'm over emphasising the rolling r's there but rhotic accents do make a difference. I could tell if someone with my accent was meaning the boys name or the island as they sound different to us! Smile

BumDisease · 05/09/2018 13:58

^ correct. Ah-run is the name, Arr-an is the island!

Sunflower321 · 05/09/2018 14:10

*Why not spell it Airon if you prefer that pronunciation?

Maybe it should?

SoupDragon · 05/09/2018 14:26

No, it’s fine as it is with the correct spelling. If you want ah-ren spell it
Ahren , if you want it Arron spell it Arron. Where will you stop?

It’s an ambiguous name like Helen-a/Helayna etc. No need to change the spelling, just for people to learn who uses which pronunciation. It’s not difficult really.

DesmondSwayne · 05/09/2018 15:15

I pronounce it Arron, to rhyme with Karen/Darren

starkid · 05/09/2018 15:27

Ah-run, like Karen, and like the a in arrow like you said :)

BertrandRussell · 05/09/2018 15:57

What's the point of the double a if it does ant make a difference to the pronounciation?

ImNotBusyImLazy · 05/09/2018 15:58

My brother's name is Aaron, and we pronounce it "Air-run" (as would rhyme with Karen, Darren). We're American, BTW, and in the US that is the most common pronunciation.

DesmondSwayne · 05/09/2018 16:09

What's the point of the double a if it does ant make a difference to the pronunciation?

It's an anglicised version of a Hebrew name. That will be where the double a comes from.

And there is no logic to spelling/pronunciation in English and it's pointless to search for it!

BertrandRussell · 05/09/2018 16:13

DesmondSwayne-that is the scariest username on Mumsnet.......

Anylouu · 05/09/2018 17:05

Ah-run in uk east anglia

helacells · 05/09/2018 17:55

Sorry, couldn't resist
A A Ron! 😂😂

abbie7 · 05/09/2018 18:23

I know people who pronounce it AH-run and some who pronounce it AIR-un.
I prefer AIR-un but you could pronounce it either way!

RavenWings · 05/09/2018 18:37

My brother's name is Aaron, and we pronounce it "Air-run" (as would rhyme with Karen, Darren).

They rhyme but not in the way you mean at all for me - kah ren, dah ren!
