Pronunciation of Esme

We had pretty much decided on this name if this baby (currently 32 weeks) is a girl. I think of it as es-may. However at the park yesterday I heard one little boy call out to his sister Es-mee. Don’t like this at all and frankly it is putting me off. Is this a common pronunciation of the name??

I am not keen on Esmay
I thought it was Esmee

personal choice I supose

funmummy48 · 02/09/2018 10:00

I've only ever heard it pronounced Esmee. It's my niece's name and I have a friend with a daughter named Esme too.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/09/2018 10:02

I cringe at the Esmee pn,too. It's horrible.
However to save any confusion.
There's nothing stopping you spelling it Esmay

GaraMedouar · 02/09/2018 10:02

I would pronounce it Ez May.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 02/09/2018 10:03

I would say Es-mee unless otherwise informed. I know the Esmay pronounciation and don’t like it, but know it’s common. It needs an accent on the second e to make that sound though, Esmé.

sirlee66 · 02/09/2018 10:04

Ez may

How they pronounce it in the Twilight films

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 02/09/2018 10:04

Awwlookatmybabyspider surely what should be stopping her is correct spelling?

Indoraptor · 02/09/2018 10:04

I would always ask because I think both are equally common. I agree it should be Esmé to be pronounced Esmae though.

Halfpastfreckle · 02/09/2018 10:05

My phone won’t let me type it but I had planned to put an accent over the last “e” which MIGHT make people realise the right way to say it but I doubt it. I already have a Louis and any time somebody calls him “Lewis” my blood pressure rises a little bit so if I’m going to get es-mee I might have to go back to the drawing board Hmm

This is the exact reason we didn't name dd2 esme. I like es-may but most people seem to say es-mee and I couldn't be doing with correcting everyone.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/09/2018 10:08

Es-may sounds contrived to me and a bit affected.

IggyAce · 02/09/2018 10:08

I like either pronunciation. The same happens with Evelyn it’s either Ev-Lyn or Eve-Lyn, I usually check with parent and pronounce it how they say.

cariadlet · 02/09/2018 10:09

I've only ever heard it pronounced Ezmee but would pronounce it Ezmay if I saw an accent over the final e.

5krunning · 02/09/2018 10:10

Ez-may

toothtruth · 02/09/2018 10:10

Can be either. I would naturally say Es-may but I had a friend called Esme who used to get very cross if anyone called her that and insisted on Es-mee.

SasBel · 02/09/2018 10:11

Es me in the UK I am afraid, only heard es may in the US.

DumptonPark · 02/09/2018 10:13

I would say esmay but I have heard esmee more often. I think you would constantly be having to clarify, even with the accent above the e.

Manderleyagain · 02/09/2018 10:14

I've heard ez may more often. That's how I'd say it. It might be regional ie depending on where you live.

BevBrook · 02/09/2018 10:15

I would say Es May. Esmee seems weird to me. Is it from Twilight or something?

Branleuse · 02/09/2018 10:17

Ezmay

Halfpastfreckle · 02/09/2018 10:18

I had literally never heard of anybody say es-mee until the little boy in the park and now I’m really thrown by it esp people who say Es-may is “contrived”. A quick google on how to pronounce it says es-may but also throws up several previous name board threads on this topic all equally divided!!! I’m in turmoil now as the name thing is driving me mad. Can’t find a boys name at all and thought as least the girls name was sorted aaaagggghhhhh!!!

I've never heard it as esmee. Esmay is how everyone I know would pronounce it

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/09/2018 10:22

Esmè= Esmay to me

cameltoeflappyflapflap · 02/09/2018 10:24

Es May but that is my accent.

OldSchoolPhotograph · 02/09/2018 10:25

I know 3 people called Esmé (one is a teenager, one is late twenties, the other in her forties). They all pronounce their name Esmee.
