Partner thinks name is too feminine for boy

Hi,

We're struggling to name
No. 3. It's going to be a boy and I really like Inigo but my partner thinks it's too feminine and pompously middle class... I don't see this and tbh, I don't want an overly masculine name either.

Boys are SO much harder to name!

Could you compromise and have it as a middle name? Thats what we did with a name i really wanted and he didnt, first name was one he preferred and i was ok with but didn't 'love'. Agreed the compromise.

rosablue · 29/08/2018 17:23

I like Inigo and Indigo as names but no good if your dh doesn't.

Edmund is another name that shortens well to Bear if you want something a bit different from Edward.

There are also lots of names that mean Bear from all sorts of other languages - for example have a look at this list Names meaning Bear - including everything from Orson (Old English from Latin) to Math (Ancient Welsh) to Minoru (Japanese) and Nanuq (Inuit). Plus several I'd never really thought of being derived from Bear including Humphrey and Bernard!

Jago and Arlo are nice.

I've always had a soft spot for Ptolomy (which dh vetoed Sad for ds1 and ds2) which I like the nickname Toly for - but they could go for PT or Pete if they wanted something less unusual!

I love the name. Very Spanish though, wouldn't say feminine in the slightest. Good luck! We don't know the sex of our baby and have NO names (and around 7 weeks to get some).

MikeUniformMike · 29/08/2018 19:41

Inigo is a boy's name. Cosmo is good. I'm not keen on Milo or Arlo.
How about Bruno? Nero? Enzo?

MikeUniformMike · 29/08/2018 19:52

I know an Inigo. It never crossed my mind that it sounded feminine.

Racecardriver · 29/08/2018 19:54

It's masculine. Not particularly MC either.

I've never heard of that name, but male or female, I reckon it's pompous and daft

Knittedfairies · 29/08/2018 20:00

I’ve only heard of Inigo Jones the architect; definitely male.

CaMePlaitPas · 29/08/2018 20:06

I don't like any of these names! What about Javier?

crazydoglady6867 · 29/08/2018 20:11

How about Jago or Eric they are nice names and not too masculine, try him with those.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 29/08/2018 20:14

Edmund is another name that shortens well to Bear

Does it?? Am I being really dense in asking how? Confused

Or is it Edmund-ed-eddie-teddy-teddy bear-bear. 6 degrees of separation. Literally.

Chalkybee · 29/08/2018 20:26

@Atalune - you've named our second child in that list ☺️

Some great suggestions in here - I'll put some to him later!

I also have no idea how Edmund gets to bear?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bear is an animal or a toy. Inigo is much nicer.

@Anotherdayanotherdollar and @Chalkybee - Edmund gets to Bear in the same way Edward gets to Bear... Either the long route as suggested by another or Ed>Ted>Bear...

The one I know went Edmund>Ted>Bear because there were lots of Edwards in his class that had collard assorted variations of Ed, Eddie, Ned etc so he became Ted to all and sundry, Bear to those close to him!

Puremince · 30/08/2018 02:41

It's not too feminine, but I think you might get fed up of hearing Princess Bride quotes.

MyOtherProfile · 30/08/2018 02:49

Inigo is a brilliant name. Make him watch the princess bride to see what a macho name it is. And please use Montoya as a middle name.

littlebillie · 30/08/2018 02:53

Hmm he is going to suffer with that name on so many levels

MyOtherProfile · 30/08/2018 07:08

But PB fans will adore him and think he is super cool!

Inigo is better than Bear. But I do think it's a difficult one to pull off. People won't know how to say it. I've never heard of the Princess Bride association. I just think of Inigo Jones, the architect.

MrBull · 08/09/2018 19:06

I don't know how to pronounce it, which is never a great start!

Petalflowers · 08/09/2018 19:11

Never heard of Inigo. When I see Inigo Jone, I think if Indianna Jones.

Nodressrehearsal · 08/09/2018 19:27

I would find it really tricky to pronounce. I really like Fox, Victor or Jake. Don’t saddle him with a lifetime of teachers stumbling over it on the register.
Good Luck choosing!!

Sessy19 · 08/09/2018 19:40

I can’t understand how people are struggling with the pronounciation of this name 😂😂😂

It’s as it’s written. Inigo. Indigo without a D. In-ih-go.

I know one. He’s a bit of an oddity. It’s a pretty flouncy name to me. But probably because of this chap I know. It’s not my taste at all. I prefer more masculine names.
