Yes OP I'm not keen on Albie. Fred and Bert are short for Alfred and Albert. My two are 6 and 2 and absolutely rock their old man names, am so glad I went with them!

Geoff and Eric, Great Grandads were Walter x 2, Joe and George. Traditional family name was Eli, we loved Elijah but had dds so didn't get to use it.

Loyaultemelie · 27/08/2018 17:30

William (Bill) and Godfrey. Dh were William and Thomas (Tom)

tierraJ · 27/08/2018 17:32

My grandad John's brothers (born 1910 - 1920) were Carl, Joseph Gustav & Peter. We think their mothers parents were European from ?where.

My grandad William (Bill's) brothers were Reece & Cecil with a few other half brothers also called William.

Great grandad Reece William the bare knuckle boxer was actually a bigamist with 2 families including grandad Bill's, he had approx 22 children most didn't survive childhood. As each child died the next child would be given the same name confusingly.

My other great grandfathers born in Victorian times were Charles, Alexander & Joseph.

iklboo · 27/08/2018 17:32

James & Harold (Jim & Harry)

Electrocute1980 · 27/08/2018 17:34

Ali (short for Alexander) and Sandy (also short for Alexander!)

tierraJ · 27/08/2018 17:35

Also in or before Victorian times the mothers surnames were often used as middle names.

So my great grandfather Charles had the middle name Bloomfield & was Jewish.

Liefster · 27/08/2018 17:35

Eddie and Arthur!

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 27/08/2018 17:37

Interesting, I actually pondered this as my sn could be a male name (think Robertson/Peterson)

Of all my grandads & great uncles only Les (Leslie) is still alive at 93.
He had a brother called Stanley.

One great aunt married a Harry. (Not Henry).
Another married a Walter.
