Hi
We are having a baby girl soon and we have made a list of all the favourite names. The problem is we have 30 altogether and know idea how to narrow them down.

How did everyone narrow down there lists.

OP posts:

MartyMcFly1984 · 24/08/2018 11:47

We narrow our lists by only adding names we agree on. Meant there was no names on ds2s list until the morning he was born. Ds1 has 2 names on his list. 😂

user1467662525 · 24/08/2018 12:57

Name her Adelaide with Harbour as middle name 😂

Cindie943811A · 24/08/2018 14:36

Adelaide was my great grandmother’s name — I think there was a Princess Adelaide whom the Australian City May have been named after. A Victorian name which naught be due for a come back. Can be shortened to Ada.
I feel Luna is too close to lunatic — both associated with the moon.
If you use the boys’ name Levi you might as well give her the second name of Jean.
Why Harbour? Not even pretty sounding
Henriette is the French version of Henrietta. A Victorian revival of a 17th century favourite.
The last few variations on a theme will never be spelled correctly and could be quite annoying.
Good luck

RosiePosies · 24/08/2018 15:23

I love Luna, and I love Skye but with an 'E'

diddl · 24/08/2018 15:34

Perhaps start by narrowing down to names you both like?

We both only liked one boy's name & one girl's name!

Good job we had one of each!

diddl · 24/08/2018 15:37

For me (which I know isn't helpful), I can get it down to

Henriette
Lara
Laura
Clara
Esme.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 24/08/2018 15:49

30.Alora - Call her Primrose

MrsFoxPlus4 · 24/08/2018 15:50

Oh I didn’t notice Laura no it’s dated. A Laura bullied me in school

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 24/08/2018 15:53

I wrote the names (both first and second name options) on bits of paper and cut them up, with one with our surname. Then I laid them on the carpet and lived with them for a few days, to see whether I warmed up to or disliked one over time.

Mojo126 · 24/08/2018 16:30

I loved Posy for my youngest daughter but everyone hated it, I still love it though. I love Emmeline, Primrose and Polly (my eldests middle name).

deptfordgirl · 24/08/2018 16:51

Emmeline is gorgeous. Also love Clara and Elora. I know a little Elora and think it's lovely whenever I see her, although she does sometimes get Ellie.

Dani18 · 24/08/2018 17:13

My favourites are;
Primrose
Scarlet
Adelaide
Esmee

VerbenaGirl · 24/08/2018 17:42

With DD1 we wrote each on on a post it note and put them on a full length mirror in the hall. We all then moved them up and down according to our preferences/ mood that day and ended up with the one that was most consistently at the top, and it turned out to be just right. With DD1 we had a shortlist of 3 or 4, but when she arrived none of them suited her and (after several days) we chose something that hadn’t ever featured on any of our lists - as it just suited her.

Papergirl1968 · 24/08/2018 19:08

Sorry to be rude but most of them are awful!
I can kind of see the theme you’re going for. Have you thought of Isla or Eden?

pouraglasshalffull · 24/08/2018 22:29

I've managed to narrow DD name down from about 100 to 3 haha! I just kept saying it out loud as a full name and writing it down to see which I thought looked best, that eliminated a few. Then I got DH to pull a few out of a hat. I realised then that I was disappointed when others didn't get pulled out so that narrowed it down even more

Top 3 from your list:
Luna
Scarlett
Daisy

I absolutely love the name Luna. Such a beautiful name and is top of the top 3 by miles. I really hope you choose that name!

Fun fact: I was called Skye up until I was born, then my parents changed their minds when they saw me. I'm glad they did!

motherlovesherkids · 24/08/2018 23:56

go with what you want to pick and what you feel is a nice timeless name like I called my first daughter Iona as I thought it's unique but not too unique , she's 17 now and is loving life
Iona Mårble Arché

Enko · 25/08/2018 00:30

We have similar taste in names OP and that will in my opinion = you will get slaughtered here on MN for wanting something that is not the usual.

This is my opinion

1.Luna - I love this name its adorable and works well both for a little girl and an adult
2.Sky - I dont mind this I prefer it spelled Skye though.
3.Primrose - For me this is a bit to safe
4.Daisy - dull
5.Emmeline - I think this is sweet but it will be taken down to Emme or Emma would you be ok with that?
6.Henriette - My best friend in school was Henriette we all called her Henry though. Yes it is a real name to those who says it should be with an a at the end.
7.Fleur - beautiful
8.Scarlet - back in the safe zone for me but its "ok"
9.Lottie - not to my liking
10.Polly - sweet
11.Lara - Beautiful
12.Laura- I like Laura but I have only known lovely Laura's so it comes down to that
13.Lyra - lovely but has recently gone through a spike in popularity does that matter?
14.Elke - I like it but grew up in Scandinavia so mentally see Elke Summer
15.Posy - I am pretty neutral on Posy its ok
16.Pansy - I Like Pansy but prefer Tansy
17.Clara - nice name but back in safe area.
18.Levi - I don't like it for a girl.
19.Lovi - this is likely the only one on your list I am not keen on or think is safe.
20.Adaline - I like both Adaline and Adeline
21.Alara - I like Alara as a name its pretty and unusual but not weird. (yes it is a name to those who feel it is not of either German or Turkish origin)
22.Elara - I like it better spelled Alara but this is nice. this is one where I think you can cut one off though. Do you like it better said Alara or Elara?
23.Rosalina - this is ok I don't mind it but nor do I think WOW
24.Leia - Neutral.
25.Adelaide- this was on our shortlist for our oldest but feel off before she was born.
26.Primrose - Already comented
27.Harbour - I wouldn't but I have a unisex name myself and never liked it. I think names like this is similar. I would not however think " omg" if someone introduced their child as Harbour.
28.Esme - I love Esme as a name but it is popular
29.Elora - I love Elora as a name it partially means light I think its gorgeous
30.Alora - This is the first name I haven't come across before so I went to google God is Light is a pretty meaning. Again here I think you need to ask do I prefer Elora or Alora and get rid of the one that you like the least.

My top 3 of our list would be
Luna
Elora
Pansy (but as I said I would personally have Tansy)

SE13Mummy · 25/08/2018 02:09

Our list was never as long as yours, in part because we disregarded names that either one of us wasn't keen on. By the time DD1 arrived, we knew she'd be called whichever one of the three names she most suited - her middle name was decided long ago so each of the names worked well with that. DD2's name was chosen because of its meaning, as was her middle name. There was no narrowing down to do; once we found this particular name, it was hers.

From your list, my favourite names are:

Adelaide
Adeline
Clara
Emmeline
Luna
Polly
Primrose

I like them for a variety of reasons, some because they're not over-used, others I've taught/know people with those names, some have good abbreviations and a couple are characters from history or from books I've enjoyed.

I think Adelaide, Adeline or Emmeline would sound lovely with Primrose as a middle name.

TheGhostOfYou · 25/08/2018 07:14

We didn't have a list with DD1, we picked one name before we found out she was a girl but it was changed to a slightly shorter name but similar sounding.

DD2 I had a list, I whittled it down to 3 and asked my partner, he chose his favourite and that's DD2 name. I gave them both their middle names, there was no discussion for that

TheGhostOfYou · 25/08/2018 07:16

Oh and from your list I like

Luna
Clara
Leia
Elora
Primrose

JW1226 · 25/08/2018 07:29

Luna
Skye
Pansy - I love this name the most. X

KittyB52 · 25/08/2018 08:11

Well done on finding such a long list of names that you both like - we struggled to find even a couple, as I wanted something more unusual while DH went for the safer option.

From your list, Primrose is lovely, as is Clara. What about something like Fern, or Lilac? I apparently had a great great aunt called Lilac, so may be biased. Grin

Geneticsbunny · 25/08/2018 08:17

We went for practical and made a spreadsheet which we rated names 1-5 in secret separately from each other. The ratings were combined onto a 3rd sheet and then we picked from the top 5 names,

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 25/08/2018 09:13

Skye is on my list 😂 I love this name
Scarlett
Esme
My friend has just called her little girl primrose 🤣

I had the same problem but but with boys names, my DS name was already picked out as we didn’t know what we were having but I had a feeling was a boy. For my second for the first 20 weeks I had about 30 boys names, I just kept saying the names over and over and eventually I didn’t like some of them so just removed them, then a few weeks later we found out it was girl. I still have both lists 🤣

Blinkydoo · 25/08/2018 09:15

I like daisy and Polly.

Not pansy as where I live it's an insult for being soft.
