Hi everyone, I was just wondering what your favourite nicknames for Elizabeth are? Our DD tends to be called Betsy at home. Not sure if it’s the best choice for when she gets older though! Opinions appreciated!

When she's older, she'll choose her own. You don't need to plan it for her.

AtticaRose · 22/08/2018 21:59

Beth.

But I agree - she'll choose her own!

Many of my friends were given nicknames by their parents that continued into adulthood, so surely it sometimes has some bearing and nicknames often stick (although she’s perfectly welcome to choose whatever nickname she likes, obviously). I was just curious as to what other people liked and what they thought of when hearing the different nicknames.

Lizzie or Libby

Lizzie or Beth

I do agree with previous comments to some extent, she might pick her own, but sometimes people go with what they know.

I don't want to put my own name on here but it can be shortened a couple different ways , I've always been known as one (by my family) so I'd never have even considered using an alternative. Actually I rarely refer to myself with my full name either lol. If you're constantly being called by a certain name you're more likely to stick with that I think

TheWanderlust · 22/08/2018 22:03

Lizzie / Eliza

Bess or Lizzy

My mum is Elsie and my sister is Liz to some people (I still call her Elizabeth)

AtticaRose · 22/08/2018 22:05

It can have a bearing, sure. But you've give her a name with lots of flexibility, and that's good! Call her Betsy if you like it - if she feels too grown up for it one day, she'll let you know.

For what it's worth, I have 6 close friends from school - 0% of us were called at school the name our parents call us. My sister also has a different nickname at home to elsewhere. My brother never wanted a nickname at all.

CarrieBlu · 22/08/2018 22:06

I adore Elsie. Beautiful name!

Thanks @AtticaRose, interesting to hear. I was the opposite, was always desperate for a nickname, but there’s not much that can be done with my name unfortunately!

I only know one. Her nickname used by her parents is Buffy.

starzig · 22/08/2018 22:12

What's wrong with Elizabeth. It is a lovely name. Sacrilege to shorten it.

Bella898 · 22/08/2018 22:12

Ellie or Lizzy

CarrieBlu · 22/08/2018 22:15

Interesting that so many of you mention Lizzy/Lizzie. I’ve seen a lot of hate on here for that name before - “the dreaded Lizzy/Liz” etc etc!

Lizzy or Libby

DD is 8 & has a similar traditional name with many options for abbreviations. We use one and she introduces herself as that. However, amongst her gang of friends she is known as something random and at Brownies she seems to be know by the initial of her first name.
I'm relaxed about this as I also have a long name with many abbreviations, was called one by my parents, a different one when doing sport, my full name at school (and now at work) and a variety of others by different people. I very rarely call myself by the wrong name to the wrong person.

bitheby · 22/08/2018 22:26

Beth

BillyAndTheSillies · 22/08/2018 22:28

Two of the three Elizabeth's I know are Lily's. The other is just Lil.

37KAT · 22/08/2018 22:33

You can call her Betsy at home but as PP say, her friends or perhaps she herself will abbreviate it to something else. Both my DD's have done this.

LuckyDiamond · 22/08/2018 22:34

Boo

Ginger1982 · 22/08/2018 23:02

My mum uses my full name, DH uses his personal nickname and then introduces me to people by a different nickname!

Picknickers · 22/08/2018 23:46

My sister is Bette by choice

BakedBeans47 · 22/08/2018 23:48

Libby
