Honest opinions on Edith please...

Not that we should be adding to our ridiculously long girl's list but I've been liking it a lot recently... I'm curious to know how well received it is. Thanks!

Well, even though I wouldn't pick Violet, I see Edith and Violet as being in the same style. Sisters. Old lady chic. Probably both popular last in about 1920 ish. Lady Edith and Lady Violet don't sound ridiculous. I see Aurora as being very modern, from America (nothing wrong with that obviously) but it is not an old name. Just my impression. Not based on anything scientific or statistical.

pixieloux · 21/08/2018 21:57

@N0bodysM0t I think it's become popular very quickly which makes it feel more modern... It's been used since 1800s (more so in the US though, you're right) It's linked to mythology (goddess of Dawn), was used in Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty in 1890 and the Disney version was released in 1959 so I don't see it as a modern name at all. It definitely wasn't as popular when we named her 6 and a half years ago lol so I guess it feels more old fashioned to me than modern/will date to this era.

I like Edith but mentally would put it in a different category to Aurora.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 23/08/2018 15:50

Personally I think Edith is just too “spinstery” but I like Cecily

snowone · 23/08/2018 15:55

Much prefer Edie - so much nicer IMO

LeeMiller · 23/08/2018 16:38

Edith and Violet I'd group with Victorian/Edwardian names like Florence, Beatrice, Rose, Iris, Eliza, Cecily, Alice, Lily, Elsie.

Aurora was used for characters by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Mary Bradden in the Victorian era but I'd group it more with other Italian-sounding names like Eva, Luna, Aria, Isabella, Sofia.

I like Aurora and Violet but love Edith and especially Edie which I think is very chic.

pixieloux · 23/08/2018 16:58

Our daughters are Aurora and Violet so I guess we've crossed two different styles with their names lol.

Both are lovely names and I think people can get carried away with sibling names matching - most of their lives they'll be known independently and won't come as a set.

pixieloux · 23/08/2018 19:19

@LeeMiller Thats true. I don't Aurora stands out as different in style but I guess it's subjective. I remember when we were naming Violet, people saying that it fitted in better with "our classic style" our other option, Willow. I've always felt like Aurora and Violet pair well but Violet doesn't feel completely "old lady" to me lol.

Aurora and Violet are gorgeous OP! Congrats.

Phoebe, Beatrice, Cecilia or Imogen would go brilliantly. The first two go the best IMO.

Don’t ruin it with Edith - she’ll always be the sister who drew the short straw name-wise. Use it as a middle name.

TatianaLarina · 23/08/2018 22:21

I see Aurora as being very modern, from America (nothing wrong with that obviously) but it is not an old name.

It’s Roman!

pixieloux · 23/08/2018 22:36

Thanks, @TatianaLarina

I do love Edith (and Frances) but I am wondering if they're the best fit with our clan's names lol.

N0bodysM0t · 24/08/2018 23:00

@tatianalarina, well, yes, I meant American in its usage. Popularised as a girls' name in America.

LMDC · 26/08/2018 02:44

Love it!

Ozgirl01 · 26/08/2018 02:48

I really like Edith, and love the nn Edie.

Ozgirl01 · 26/08/2018 02:55

I agree with PP that Aurora has a different feel to Edith, but i think Violet bridges the gap between the two, as it is both nature-y and old-lady chic. I think Aurora, Violet and Edith would be a lovely sister set.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/10/2018 18:50

I much prefer Edith to Aurora.

pixieloux · 02/10/2018 19:41

@SchadenfreudePersonified Aurora is my eldest’s name.

pixieloux · 02/10/2018 19:42

... Not a name we’re considering now.

Sungura · 02/10/2018 20:47

I do like it quite a lot. ❤️

bridgetreilly · 02/10/2018 20:56

Did you pick a name, OP? I love it when people come back and tell us what they actually chose.

pixieloux · 02/10/2018 21:10

Still deciding, @bridgetreilly but we’ve got until late Feb / early March to decide lol. We found out we’re having a boy and a girl at the weekend though :)

OP posts:
AvoidingMarking · 02/10/2018 21:35

I quite like it but I prefer Imogen. I am pregnant and suggested it to OH but he says no

Shadow1234 · 02/10/2018 21:39

I also like a lot of the old-fashioned names, but Edith isnt one of them.
Doesnt have a feminine feel.

pixieloux · 02/10/2018 21:45

I don’t think we’re going to keep Edith in the running anymore, anyway.

Beatrix, Cecily & Penelope are our top three girl names. Felicity & Imogen are maybes as of now but are still in the running.

We’ve decided agasint Edith, Elodie, Florence, Frances, Margot & Phoebe. I’m sad about losing Elodie & Margot but we’ve been told Elodie is too close to Violet aka Letty & I know Margot is too close to Theo, our son’s NN but what he goes by 99.9% of the time 💔

We have Elias, Elijah, Sebastian & Zachary on our boy’s list.
