Honest opinions on Edith please...

Not that we should be adding to our ridiculously long girl's list but I've been liking it a lot recently... I'm curious to know how well received it is. Thanks!

I love it ❤️

SwearingMakesEverythingBetter · 21/08/2018 09:46

I love it! I have an Edith, she's 8. We have met one or two others so it's not completely out there.

She was slightly named after Edith Wharton and Edith Cavell but mostly we just liked it.

Ledehe · 21/08/2018 09:51

I think Violet and Edith go together wonderfully. I like the name if people pronounce it correctly Edith not Ediff which some people may do

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/08/2018 09:53

Really, really love it

If you'd said ENID, now - that would have been a different story

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/08/2018 10:53

Just wanted to add my vote-love Edith.
I like all your names so obviously similar taste Grin

OliviaStabler · 21/08/2018 10:59

Sorry, I don't like it. Sounds like a grumpy old lady.

Edith and Enid are out of the same bag.

Charley50 · 21/08/2018 11:48

Ooh love it! Or Esther.

Onecutefox · 21/08/2018 12:27

Better Edith than Esther although both name sound unattractive.

pixieloux · 21/08/2018 13:20

I actually like Enid but DH doesn't. I love Frances too

OP posts:
SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/08/2018 13:34

Frances is lovely!

I like Francis for a boy, too, but wouldn't want it shortened to Frank.

pixieloux · 21/08/2018 13:35

@SchadenfreudePersonified That's what puts me off Francis and House of Cards/Kevin Spacey.

I wouldn't say Edith was a classic name, but it is definitely old-fashioned, which feeds into the current trend for granny chic names.
The problem is the trend will date, and your child will be left with a name which will instantly age her to 2010 onwards.

It's the same as the trend for monosyllable boys' names in the early to mid 1990s - there are loads of 25-year-olds called Ben, Sam, Joe, Josh etc.
Because this kind of name is very much on trend now, people are used to hearing them, and inevitably say such names are gorgeous, lovely, cute etc. They would not have said this in 1995 for instance.
Posters are unklikely to be as gushing over names such as Leanne, Carol, Helen or Gillian, but fast forward 20 years, and I'm

cathf · 21/08/2018 14:06

sure they will be!

pixieloux · 21/08/2018 18:45

@cathf I guess I've never thought about our children's names becoming dated... Violet, for example (our youngest's name) is an old fashioned name but seems to be making a comeback in the UK. I personally wouldn't expect to meet only babies and elders with the name Violet. I guess I don't with any names on our list... Not really thought about it but I suppose there's a difference... I see what you mean. I, for one, like Carol and Helen though lol.

@N0bodysM0t Yeah, I can't say I'm a fan of Editha. I agree that Margot Robbie has probably been the main reason for the name's popularly rise lately - she is an all round stunner lol. We're in Cork but I wouldn't say our children's names stand out at school... They're the only ones but I wouldn't say they're completely different in style.

... DD1's name is a bit different but still an old name. She gets positive attention from it because it's "a princess name" - She absolutely loves it. DS's name is the most of the three by far but his shortened form (which he goes by most of the time) is popular. We've met 2 of them now. I don't think Violet is that different in style to Ava, Emma,
Freya, etc either.

Having been so rude about Edith I think it only fair to tell you Violet is one of my most favourite names! Tis beautiful and reminds me of the Violet in a Rutshire Jilly Cooper book (she was the much nicer sister of Perdita).

pixieloux · 21/08/2018 19:34

@Dljlr Not rude at all, my lovely! We all have different tastes and I asked for opinions plus I'm used to it as our eldest has a bit of a marmite name... I've seen many a negative comment about it on the interwebs and baby name sites lol.

OP posts:
N0bodysM0t · 21/08/2018 21:09

and you can't win! my DD's name is both too frilly and too plain according to mumsnet!

missmouse101 · 21/08/2018 21:10

Hideous.

pixieloux · 21/08/2018 21:13

@N0bodysM0t DD1 is Aurora... A very marmite name from what I've seen online lol. Also "frilly"... Oh well lol

OP posts:
N0bodysM0t · 21/08/2018 21:27

Wow that is a v different style from Edith!

pixieloux · 21/08/2018 21:37

@N0bodysM0t Do you think? Lol. I'm interested to know what 'style' people think Aurora fits as I think of it in the same way as Violet.
