And what do you think of the name?! Thanks.

I’d pronounce it em-me-leah. It’s a lovely name, very pretty but she will spend half her life correcting everyone who calls her Amelia.

Summersup · 11/08/2018 11:57

The way you have written it isn't how I would pronounce it, I would say Emeeeliah all one word. It is a pretty name. Quite similar to the Emily's and Amelie's that are common at the moment, but I like it.

theunsure · 11/08/2018 12:00

The standard pronunciation is Em-me-lea, I have never heard it Emily-ah. I’d suggest a different spelling if you want it pronounced that way.
I love the name with the usual pronounciation, it’d have been top of my list if we’d been able to have DC.

MrsMrsMrsMrs · 11/08/2018 12:03

It’s such a pretty name. It was on our list -possibly because DH quite likes Emilia Fox-

Friolero · 11/08/2018 12:05

It's a lovely name but I agree with PPs on the pronunciation, I'd say Em-ee-leah rather than Emily-ah. We had it on our list for DC1 but was worried about the constant confusion with Amelia.

a2inthehouse · 11/08/2018 12:05

Lovely name but I've only ever heard it pronounced like Amelia. You'll have a lifetime of correcting people's way of saying it or spelling it

MummyInHeel · 11/08/2018 12:08

Thanks all. Glad you like it but will have to decide if we can cope with pronunciation issues!

OP - as I'm sure you know, Emilia is Italian in origin. It is based on a very old Roman name ( and has no connection with Amelia). It is also the name of a region in Italy.

In case it helps regarding pronunciation, these audio clips show how the Italians (and people in other European countries) say 'Emilia' - 'Eh -mee-lee-ah' : forvo.com/search/Emilia/it/

HeyDolly · 11/08/2018 12:32

I pronounce it Em-mee-lee-ah. Have never heard it pronounced Emily-ah before.

Glowbug59 · 11/08/2018 12:33

Very pretty name

MummyInHeel · 11/08/2018 12:38

Thanks Flora

I’ve never heard Emily-ah before.

MikeUniformMike · 11/08/2018 12:44

I say it as Em-eel-ya.

Secretlifeofme · 11/08/2018 12:49

I know one who pronounces it Em- il- LEE - ah and one who pronounces it Em- EE- lee -ah. I like the first pronunciation the best. I can't get my head around Emily-ah to be honest - where are you placing the emphasis?

MummyInHeel · 11/08/2018 12:56

Secret, emi-LEE-ah might be a better way of describing pronouciation. Also like Eh-milly-a.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 11/08/2018 12:57

It’s pronounced like Amelia but with an eh instead of an ah sound at the beginning. Pronouncing it another way isn’t ‘different’, it’s just wrong.

Tinty · 11/08/2018 13:02

Weirdly I know two Emilia's Grin. Both pronounced differently to your post OP.

One is pronounced E Me Lia and nicknamed Emmi and the other is pronounced Em A La. (or Emma La Smile)

Gorbie · 11/08/2018 13:09

My baby girl (6weeks) is Emilia, we say it Em IL Lee Ah

cholka · 11/08/2018 13:15

My friends have an Emilia. I can never remember how to say it and feel awkward every time.

MummyInHeel · 11/08/2018 13:30

Congrats Gorbie.

E-mill-ee-ah

It's ok

BonnieLass5 · 11/08/2018 15:25

It's definitely em-me-lee-a. It's not pronounced how you've written it OP.

I hate the name personally. Emilias and Amelias are everywhere. She'll be probably one of at least six in her class at school. It's also not particularly nice sounding. Makes me think of mealworms.

foodiefil · 11/08/2018 15:53

Emily-ah sounds like a mispronunciation.

Emilia is Amelia.

Never heard it pronounced Emily-ah before.

Have you heard that or decided that's how you're going to pronounce it?

It doesn't even sound right to me ConfusedHmm sorry

daisypond · 11/08/2018 19:20

Like Amelia but with an Eh sound at the start. Definitely not Emily-ah.
