Names I'm thinking of...

Lydia

Athena (MN seem to think poster shop, but I'm too young to know about it and my DMum doesn't remember)

Amanda

Alison

Alice (not sure if too similar to 'a lice')

Delaney (too surnamey?)

Dora

Alexandra

Freya (reminds you of fraying a thread? Perhaps she will go round the party and ruin everyone's dress?)

What's your favourite from my list?

I have an Alice. No one has EVER said " a lice ". We have the occasional "who the f is..." but it's rare and short lived.

Mostly tends to be the "wonderland" stuff which is really sweet.

Appleofmypie · 03/08/2018 09:02

I actually like Delaney - doesn’t sound surnamey to me.

Also love Alison.

I have a sister called Lydia - she was called Flydia all throughout her school years and changed to her middle name at 16

Quangot · 03/08/2018 09:03

I like Amanda, Alison and Alexandra.

userabcname · 03/08/2018 09:04

I love Athena and Alexandra. Not keen on Alison.

missmouse101 · 03/08/2018 09:11

Athena. I totally remember the poster shop, but that doesn't matter a jot! If I met a baby called that, she would be all I'd think of when I heard the name in the future.

Strawberry89 · 03/08/2018 09:33

Names I'm thinking of...

Lydia- beautiful

Athena- beautiful

Amanda- nice if it's not shortened.

Alison- a mother in her 50s

Alice- nice but a tad bland in comparison to some of the others

Delaney- horrible!

Dora- nice but I'd choose Theodora and shorten it to Dora

Alexandra- beautiful

Freya- ok but not to my taste

5LeafClover · 03/08/2018 09:38

Alison but probably spelt Alicen would be my favorite. Classic but unusual now. Least keen on Delaney in case it was shortened to Deli but also bcos some accents would drag out the middle ayyy iyswim. Love Lydia Alice and Alexandra.

auntyflonono · 03/08/2018 10:00

Alice Athena Surname

kenandbarbie · 03/08/2018 10:26

Lydia - nice, unusual but in a good way.

Athena - yeah I think of the poster shop. And maybe it's a bit fancy anyway.

Amanda - someone in their 50s.

Alison - someone in their 40s

Alice - lovely it's on my shortlist. Only thing puts me off is 'who the fuck is', but then balanced out by Alice in wonderland.

Delaney - I agree to surnamey.

Dora - the explorer.

Alexandra - Lovely also.

Freya - a bit wishy washy, I imagine someone with mousy hair who is always finding things too much for them.

kenandbarbie · 03/08/2018 10:29

I love that you asked us to Hooke up our judgy pants! I might do a similar thread as people were way to kind about my shortlist which really doesn't help me.

AreWeDoingThisNow · 03/08/2018 10:42

Lydia - like it

Athena - like it - I would think of the goddess

Amanda - dated

Alison - dated

Alice - like it but feel it's a bit boring.

Delaney (too surnamey?) - don't like it

Dora - love it as a nickname. Isadora?

Alexandra - love it and the choice of nicknames

Freya - love it but know lots of toddlers called Freya

MorrisDancingViv · 03/08/2018 11:03

Lydia - one of my favourite names

Athena - I love Greek names so thumbs up. Poster shop is ancient.

Amanda - I rather like it but know too many to be able to use it. Quite popular in Scandinavia I believe.

Alison - hmm, I was at at school with an Awful one so a no from me.

Alice - I despise this name. Sorry.

Delaney - I really like it.

Dora - is an explorer. I'd be embarrassed introducing myself as Dora. Pandora would be fine apart from that ruddy jewellery shop.

Alexandra - beautiful

Freya - nice but quite popular

DiegoMadonna · 03/08/2018 11:43

Really?? That doesn't sound like mumsnet. You must have an exceptionally good list.

MikeUniformMike · 03/08/2018 11:48

Lydia - nice but rhymes with chlamydia
Athena - Nice but prefer Athene
Amanda - Nice. Not so keen on Mandy
Alison - dated
Alice - lovely
Delaney -too surnamey. Prefer Dalony
Dora - explorer
Alexandra - ok
Freya - pretty but too popular. Pryia?

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 03/08/2018 11:48

Love Alexandra and Athena.
Hate Lydia - I think of 4 weddings and a funeral and just hear 'Lydia and Bernard'. Also Lydia was a baddie from 80's tv series 'V'!
Amanda is ugly imo, as is Alison. Alice is sweet though.
Dora = the explorer and Freya is a bit fashionable, so is over used.

Treaclepie19 · 03/08/2018 18:10

Athena :)
Or you could try Athene?

Greeneyedgeek83 · 03/08/2018 18:37

Lydia - ok but ok put me off with chlamydia
Athena - Nice but a bit out there if you're not Greek.
Amanda - dreadful
Alison - dated
Alice - I also have an issue with the 'a lice'
Delaney- I like it
Dora - like it but there is the explorer connection
Alexandra - nice but hate alex
Freya -ok

FASH84 · 03/08/2018 18:48

I actually really like Lydia it's not a name I would've considered before, like Alice and Alexandra too, Freya is nice but there will be at least one other in her class at school. Alison is a bit dated but but old enough to be making a come back, Delaney and Athena are awful and not in keeping with your other choices. Dora is the explorer I'm afraid.

MadMaryBoddington · 03/08/2018 18:52

My favourites are Freya, Lydia and Alice. I’m surprised to hear pps saying Freya is popular; not a single one at my dcs’ Primary school.

SunsetOverEasterIsland · 03/08/2018 19:10

Athena and Freya are my favourites from your list

duckyfuzzz · 03/08/2018 19:16

Lydia.

Athena is definitely a poster shop. (I'm 30).

MimpiDreams · 03/08/2018 20:11

Delaney is the name of a useless donkey in a Val Doonican song.

Quizeerascal · 03/08/2018 20:21

Lydia and Alice are my favourite names from your list both lovely names and 'normal' but not too popular iyswim. I wouldn't associate a lice with Alice at all. I don't remember the poster shop but to me Athena still sounds more like the name of a company than the name of a person although I'm not sure why. Amanda is nice enough but very 80s/90s and Delaney is definitely too surnamey and people would struggle to spell I think. I think Alison may be due a comeback, love Ally/Ali as a nickname. Dora is to much like the explorer I think but perhaps would work with Theodora as a full name. I like Freya and Alexandra too but am not that keen on Alex as a nickname, although you could always go for Ali I suppose

TartanHare · 03/08/2018 20:33

I loved the Athena poster shop back in the day. We spent ages staring at the magic eye posters in the window!
I also had these

TartanHare · 03/08/2018 20:35

I like Alexandra and Lydia best.
