Names I'm thinking of...

Lydia

Athena (MN seem to think poster shop, but I'm too young to know about it and my DMum doesn't remember)

Amanda

Alison

Alice (not sure if too similar to 'a lice')

Delaney (too surnamey?)

Dora

Alexandra

Freya (reminds you of fraying a thread? Perhaps she will go round the party and ruin everyone's dress?)

What's your favourite from my list?

OP posts:

Oh god, how is someone too young to remember Athena but old enough to have a child?!
I swear it was only a few years ago that I was in there with my school friends, sniggering at the black and white posters of sultry looking men.
Does this mean I’m officially old?

ButterflyOfFreedom · 02/08/2018 22:10

Freya is favourite.

Lydia is also nice.

serenmoon · 02/08/2018 22:11

The only one I like is Alice, Alexandra is ok.

Clockwork95 · 02/08/2018 22:11

Alice - don’t think of a lice because the singular of lice is louse

That's what I was going to say!

I like Athena (remember the poster shop but still like the name anyway), Alexandra, Alison and Lydia best.

SophieGiroux · 02/08/2018 22:15

Lydia is the nicest (was on my shortlist)

bridgetreilly · 02/08/2018 22:17

Lydia: I always think this sounds a bit wet.

Athena: poster shop. Plus pretentious.

Amanda: I like this, though I'm not a huge fan of Mandy. I don't think that's inevitable though.

Alison: Good choice.

Alice (not sure if too similar to 'a lice'): You are over-thinking this. It doesn't sound anything like a lice, which would actually be a louse, anyway. Lice are plural.

Delaney (too surnamey?): Awful

Dora: I don't mind this, though I think I would give her a longer name and shorten it to Dora.

Alexandra: It's okay.

Freya (reminds you of fraying a thread? Perhaps she will go round the party and ruin everyone's dress?): It doesn't remind me of that at all. I don't much like it though.

My picks would be Alison, Amanda or Alice.

LoveInTokyo · 02/08/2018 22:25

Ooh!

Hoiks up judgey pants.

Grin

Lydia - quite like this but makes me think of the little gobshite Bennett sister from Pride and Prejudice.

Athena - like it, don’t know the shop. Glamorous.

Amanda - OK but quite 80s. Amanda is an irritatingly chipper American cheerleader.

Alison - quite boring and 70s/80s. Alison is your dad’s secretary and has large bottom.

Alice - Alice... who the fuck is Alice? I think Alice might be a bit of a goody two shoes.

Delaney - good God, what are you thinking?!

Dora - Dora is your annoying little sister / a teacher’s pet who will grass you up at the first opportunity. She has a talent for pretending to cry to get her own way.

Alexandra - love it! Elegant and regal, great nn options.

Freya (reminds you of fraying a thread? Perhaps sh

LoveInTokyo · 02/08/2018 22:26

Sorry, missed Freya. Super popular at the moment but I still like it.

SemperIdem · 02/08/2018 22:29

Lydia - forever ruined when I was in my teens by a friend who called her sister “Lydia Chlamydia”

Athena - went to school with one, I like it. Prefer Artemis or Antigone though.

Alice - I also read a lice. Prefer the Welsh, Alys spelling for that reason.

Alexandra - you can’t go wrong. Classic with so many nickname options.

Amanda - bland and dated

Alison - dated

Dora - The Explorer. Cute nickname for Theodora though.

Delaney - dreadful.

WouldntWearItToTheBog · 02/08/2018 22:30

Freya is the best.

SemperIdem · 02/08/2018 22:31

Also missed Freya - I’m really not keen. I know a couple of adult Freya’s (so their parents must have been ahead of the curve) and they don’t inspire me to like it more.

Alpacamysuitcase · 02/08/2018 22:32

Alexandra is my favourite from your list. Lydia is also very nice.

NorbertTheDragon · 02/08/2018 22:54

Love Lydia, Alexandra and Freya.

Amanda and Alison are too dated, to my generation. for my liking. Not yet due a revival.

Athena, Alice and Dora are ok. Not names I'd choose, but perfectly fine names.

Delaney does sound too surnamey to me, sorry.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/08/2018 22:59

Love Dora and Freya, Delaney is nice too.

Moonflower12 · 02/08/2018 23:19

Alexandra is lovely. Alice is my 2nd favourite followed by Lydia though it may be ruined by 'Lydia Clamydia'!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/08/2018 23:34

Amanda would be very refreshing.
Lydia is gorgeous without being too over used.
Daleny is fab. Yes its surnamey but so is Harper, and I've never heard anyone moan about that.
Alice. Meh
Dora. No opinion really
Athena see above
Alexandra. Gorgeous. A name that will grow with her.
Freya. I wouldn't worry about the Frayed things connection. Well put it this way. There will be 100s of kids out there being teased about freyed dresses because Freyas are everywhere.

glintandglide · 02/08/2018 23:37

I don’t like Lydia. It’s old fashioned, like a faceless aunt name.
Athena quite unusual if you’re not Greek
Amanda and Alison old fashioned
Alice Dora Alexandra and Freya- love! Alice the most
Delaney - Reminds me of the restaurant

Joeybee · 02/08/2018 23:40

Lydia - Okay, a little boring.

Athena - Quite a nice name. Sounds a bit hipster-ish to me, a little try-hard.

Amanda - Dated.

Alison - Really dated.

Alice - Just a bit plain, but it is a name that would stand the test of time.

Delaney - yeah, too surname like, and a bit made-up sounding.

Dora - LOVE this name, and the child would probably like the Dora the Explorer link.

Alexandra - Nice classic name with a lot of versatility.

Freya - A bit too girly for my liking.

Sophronia · 02/08/2018 23:46

I like Lydia and Alexandra

JulianOfNorwich · 03/08/2018 00:04

Athena- very very lovely name.
Poster shop was DECADES ago.
I immediately thought of Athena Onassis- though actually I think she spelled it Athina.

KateMcD451 · 03/08/2018 00:15

I like Freya and Alice the most, although I prefer the Welsh spelling Alys Smile

LlamaPyjamas · 03/08/2018 00:17

I like Lydia. Reminds me of the movie Betelgeuse!

DiegoMadonna · 03/08/2018 00:31

I love Lydia! Easily my favourite from your list, the rest of which are not my kinds of name at all. Except Alexandra which is ok. But Lydia is way better.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 03/08/2018 08:21

OP, just realised I missed 'Alison'. I think this a great name, and due a comeback.

bridgetreilly · 03/08/2018 08:34

Yes its surnamey but so is Harper, and I've never heard anyone moan about that.

Happy to do some moaning about Harper for you.
