Names I'm thinking of...

Lydia

Athena (MN seem to think poster shop, but I'm too young to know about it and my DMum doesn't remember)

Amanda

Alison

Alice (not sure if too similar to 'a lice')

Delaney (too surnamey?)

Dora

Alexandra

Freya (reminds you of fraying a thread? Perhaps she will go round the party and ruin everyone's dress?)

What's your favourite from my list?

Alice and Alexandra.

Belindabauer · 02/08/2018 21:34

I like Lydia best.
I remember the poster shops called Athena.
Amanda and Alison are quite old fashioned to me.
Alice is ok
Delany is a bit surname
Dora reminds me of Dora the explorer.
Alexandra is my second favourite.
Freya is ok but very common.

TenThousandSpoons · 02/08/2018 21:35

Lydia - ok

Athena - I think poster shop (age 41)

Amanda - dated. Also think of the Friends joke “A man - derr!”

Alison - also quite dated but could be due a comeback. Nickname Ali is nice.

Alice - my favourite from your list (no licey connotations for me)

Delaney - ok, yes a bit surnamey but prefer it to others of that style

Dora - The Explorer

Alexandra - lovely, my second favourite

Freya - also like this a lot

IdLikeLongerLegsNextTimeGod · 02/08/2018 21:36

I have an irrational dislike of Lydia and Alice.

There doesn't seem to be a theme....

Dora, the explorer, no. Delany, american beauty pageant.

I like Freya best.

slithytove · 02/08/2018 21:36

Lydia my favourite
Then Alice

Don’t like Delaney or Dora

QueenJulian · 02/08/2018 21:37

Athena and Alexandra

BertrandRussell · 02/08/2018 21:38

Lydia

Squirrelclubbadges · 02/08/2018 21:39

I love Athena!

Was there really a shop that just sold posters lol?!

PixelAteMe · 02/08/2018 21:42

Alexandra
Lydia
Alice

These are all lovely names, classic and not over-used. Alison is also nice and I agree it’s due a revival. I don’t know any under 50.

Mindchilder · 02/08/2018 21:43

I like Lydia, Alice, Dora and Freya.

I know under 2s called Lydia, Alice and Freya but Lydia is least common.
Never met a Dora.

I'd maybe use Theadora and then if you find Dora the Explorer too annoying you have the option of Thea.

supercalifragilistic2 · 02/08/2018 21:44

Lydia - no. Seems very 1980's to me

Athena - meh! Not a fan

Amanda - see Lydia

Alison - as above

Alice - love this name :)

Delaney (- a bit surnamey and I actually think of a boy when I heard this!

Dora - the explora? So a no for this one

Alexandra - love this, but only use if your happy with the option of Alex/Lexie etc as a nn. I can't imagine she will stay an Alexandra.

Freya- I've only heard this on a toddler once and I quite like it.

StarsShineBrightly · 02/08/2018 21:45

Lydia used to be one of my favourite names, until aunt Lydia!

Athena, yep poster shop, but long enough ago and i think it's quite cool.

Freya is my favourite from your list.

Changeymcchangechange · 02/08/2018 21:46

Lydia teapot

I like Freya

DCam06 · 02/08/2018 21:46

I love Alexandra. Alison and Freya are nice too. I dont really like the others. Cant say Ive heard of the poster shop but Athena to me isnt a baby/ small child's name. Dora the explorer isn't great tbh x

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 02/08/2018 21:54

Lydia.

Athena is also lovely but I too remember the poster seller, most especially known for the female tennis player 'flaunting' her naked arse.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_Girl

I really dislike Delaney, that sounds like a second string cop in a tedious TV series and Amanda because I wouldn't like Mandy or Mand as nicknames and I seriously dislike someone with that name, so it has negative connotations for me.

haribosmarties · 02/08/2018 21:59

I like Lydia, Athena and Dora the best!
Alexandra is quite nice but in my opinion is just a bit overused especially with how popular it is in the boys version as well
Freya is okay but overused
Hate Delaney, sounds like a tv detective show
Amanda and Alison are a bit out of fashion and not in a good way.... also hate the nn Mandy... and Alison was just the name of everyone boring mum when I was at school!! But to be fair they should be due a comeback soon so maybe you are just ahead of your time

Myneighboursnorlax · 02/08/2018 22:01

I love Alice Smile

I’m surprised a few people have said Athena the shop was long ago - the one near me only closed in 2014! Although saying that, if I met a little girl called Athena I wouldn’t think of the shop at all.

Enko · 02/08/2018 22:01

Athena is in my opinion the nicest of your names and I can recall the poster shop no issue. I still like it as a name I think it is beautiful.

SumAndSubstance · 02/08/2018 22:02

There’s a few 80s-tasting names on there. I remember Athena the poster shop, but I’m a classicist so I think of the goddess first. You could go for Athene if you want to avoid the poster shop, but I don’t think it’s a big deal. I like Alice - don’t think of a lice because the singular of lice is louse.

Dora (the explorer) and Delaney (what the fuck?!) are truly awful and Freya is 90s tastic unless you’re into Norse mythology.

So, Alice or Athena/e depending on how slightly edgy you want to go.

Unicornmammy · 02/08/2018 22:03

Ooh i love Alice. And lydia is nice x

PodgeBod · 02/08/2018 22:03

Lydia. I also like Athena and I've never heard of it being a poster shop (I'm 26)

SumAndSubstance · 02/08/2018 22:03

80s tastic, not tasting, though I suppose tasting will do!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 02/08/2018 22:06

I like Freya and Alexandra. Not Delaney. It’s a different “type” (trying to be diplomatic!) of name entirely.

AdaColeman · 02/08/2018 22:07

Freya and Lydia are my favourites.

Don't like Delaney at all, and not keen on Dora.
