So what is the D’name story?

D0do · 02/08/2018 21:06

I knew a lad called Attila-Armani who'd be in his mid 20s now. I don't know which bit of that is worse.

hesatitagain · 02/08/2018 21:10

I know a lady called Candida.
Not misspelt but definitely makes me think thrush or fungus.
Although I’ve just googled it and it is Latin for “dazzling white”
Maybe the thrush connection wasn’t as apparent 40 years ago?

piefacedClique · 02/08/2018 21:13

👍🏼YourVagesty

BikeRunSki · 02/08/2018 21:16

I have known/worked with a few Candidas over the years. They’d all be 45 -55 now. It was a fairly unremarkable when I was growing up.

YeTalkShiteHen · 02/08/2018 21:19

Sorry I disappeared to put the bairns to bed and didn’t realise anyone would be interested.

Apparently it became popular during the civil rights movement in the 60s as a way of identifying themselves (or their children) as proud African Americans in the new world (ie one where racism wouldn’t exist) where they were treated as equals, not subhuman. The reason for it being an apostrophe is the lack of other diacritical marks in the US written language.

I like the idea behind it because it speaks of hope and a common goal.

So it really isn’t the same as some of the belters on here. ReignBeau??? What the fuck?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 02/08/2018 21:21

Sound like something you cough up after a chest infection.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 02/08/2018 21:22

Analyse - nothing to do with analytics. She pronounces it Annalise.

ChristinaMarlowe · 02/08/2018 21:26

😂😂😂

EmpressOfSpartacus · 02/08/2018 21:28

I used to know three women called Armani, Chanel & Loreal.

madja · 02/08/2018 21:32

Analyse
JFC. What the hell is that!

L'Oréal got the shit end of the stick didn't she? Two designers, and a mid range supermarket brand Grin

waterlily200 · 02/08/2018 21:34

Made me think of phlegm.

QueenoftheSilverDollar12 · 02/08/2018 21:37

@YeTalkShiteHen - yours is the best username ever!!!

I know a Shivonne, a Shyvonne and a Kenz'o. 🙄

ItsNachoCheese · 02/08/2018 21:44

queenofthesilverdollar there is a kenzo in my family too but with no wanky apostrophe 😂

LotsToThinkOf · 02/08/2018 21:54

I've taught a Kaylem, and my favourite was a Flair. Her mum pronounced it Fleur.

I've also taught an array of Conor, Connor, Connaugh, Coner variations.

Some of these are awful, poor kids will have a hard time being taken seriously as adults.

QueenoftheSilverDollar12 · 02/08/2018 21:57

@ItsNachoCheese I thought the apostrophe in Kenz'o was a bit of dust on my computer screen when I first saw it.... 😬

Andylion · 02/08/2018 22:15

Thanks, YourVagesty.

asqueezeoflime · 02/08/2018 22:16

I know a lovely little
Girl called PixieBlu

Tefiti2 · 02/08/2018 22:27

@popcorneveryminute did they have Scottish connections? Aulay is a Scottish name I’ve heard a few times. Of course if they wanted a yoonique spelling of Ollie then they’re just wanks Grin

BillyAndTheSillies · 02/08/2018 22:36

I used to work with an Ayran pronounced Aaron and a Chevaun. Both constantly spelling out their names.

spottybetty · 02/08/2018 23:38

to be another urban name-myth, in the style of L-a or whatever it is.

Not a myth. I know a Se-ah

Confused
UntilTheVeryEnd · 02/08/2018 23:50

I know a KC, like those two letters are her Christian name... I’ve always wondered why would you? Confused

Seeingadistance · 02/08/2018 23:52

Flair! As in "sweep the flair"? Oh, dear!

@Tefiti2

Where have you heard Auley? It's not a Scottish name. McAuley, yes. That's a fairly common Scottish surname.

Seeingadistance · 02/08/2018 23:55

Sorry, realised I'd misspelled Aulay.

Aulay, not Auley, appears once as a first name on Facebook. Which does make it ooooonique!

popcorneveryminute · 03/08/2018 06:54

@Tefiti2 there is a Scottish connection but I think it's an attempt at being yoonique - their other child is also an A name with an uncommon spelling of a traditional Scottish name
