Why? Just. Why?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
katseyes7 · 02/08/2018 20:17

Oh god. That's dreadful! My friend knows someone who called their little girl 'Sharlit'. l don't know if they were trying to be different, or they didn't know how to spell it.

katseyes7 · 02/08/2018 20:18

Oh, and a friend had a boyfriend whose some was called 'Kaylem'. l've never heard of that before.

Seeingadistance · 02/08/2018 20:19

I know an eilidh which is Celtic for ayley!

Confused

Eilidh is a name though. It's Gaelic, and has been common throughout Scotland for a while now.

My mother - in her 70s - is an Ailie - an anglicised version of Eilidh.

I've never seen Ayley.

madja · 02/08/2018 20:19

I'd be interested to hear that story YeTalkShiteHen
I must admit, I really don't understand this desire for wierdly spelt names. I have an unusual one, or at least not that common, and I got the pee taken out of me for that!

DannyDogg · 02/08/2018 20:20

In South Wales it’s y-eye-an but In the North it’s yay-an

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/08/2018 20:21

Actually, Ieuan is pronounced Yay-ann. Or it is in rural Ceredigion where I live...

katseyes7 · 02/08/2018 20:22

lf we'd had a boy we were going to call him Danaan. lt's a proper name though (lrish) as my OH already has a Ciaran.

iklboo · 02/08/2018 20:22

I know a Dhanyul - he's christened and was brought up as a usual Daniel but decided he's too 'special' for such a normal name.

niketrainersarecomfy · 02/08/2018 20:22

Kaimarni
Couldn't decide between kai and armani

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/08/2018 20:23

Huge cross post with everyone 🤭

PeppermintPasty · 02/08/2018 20:29

I've said this before on here, but I honestly and truly know someone who called their daughter Canderel.

You're welcome.

Hygge · 02/08/2018 20:33

@niketrainersarecomfy - the name Kaimarni makes me want to kick something.

I think it's because I can here my SIL saying "Primarni" in my head when I read it.

Piggywaspushed · 02/08/2018 20:33

Ummm... no... Eilidh is Celtic for Eilidh.... Confused

niketrainersarecomfy · 02/08/2018 20:37

I worked with an 'Ayley. She said her parents liked Hayley but 'knew no one would bother pronouncing the H
Totally pissed myself at that one.

itbemay · 02/08/2018 20:42

I know a Cam’ron - v unnecessary apostrophe!

Andylion · 02/08/2018 20:45

piefacedClique

Thanks. Is it an Irish name?

florascotia2 · 02/08/2018 20:48

Eilidh is the Scottish gaelic version of a name that occurs in many European cultures. It's the equivalent of English 'Eleanor/Ellie' . 'Ellie' and 'Eilidh' are essentially the same, but written and said in different accents and spelling systems. www.behindthename.com/name/eilidh

AHintOfStyle · 02/08/2018 20:49

Eilidh is Gaelic for Helen

Itchytights · 02/08/2018 20:50

GrinGrin

Sorry but that’s hilarious but very unfortunate and unfunny for the poor child saddled with that.

It’s the yum at the end.

Grin

What the actual fuck

dementedma · 02/08/2018 20:51

my neighbour's grandson is Kenzie - he's 12. I think it sounds horrible. his sisters are the perfectly normal sounding Grace and Sophie so God knows where kenzie came from

BFGgirl · 02/08/2018 20:51

Pheobe seems to be a popular misspelling according to this site:

ReevaDiva · 02/08/2018 20:52

I know someone whose nephew is Will-yum Confused

YourVagesty · 02/08/2018 20:54

It's Welsh Andylion Smile

As a north-Wales based person, i'd say Yay-un (as opposed to south Welsh 'Yigh-un'). Just to add to the north/south pronunciation debate upthread.

ladydickisathingapparently · 02/08/2018 20:54

I think this is quite sad to be honest. Every baby/child is unique anyway so to give them a name that they will quite possibly have to correct and spell their whole life seems unfair.

Imagine ......no, it EUWWWWNEEEEQUE but pronounced Unique Sad

And I thought my generation had it hard with Sarah/Sara and Clare/Claire.

villainousbroodmare · 02/08/2018 20:56

Lots of people on FB create their ID using a deliberately, sometimes humorously altered version of their name for privacy reasons. Maybe Liam made up Leighyum for a joke please God.
